  1. MUG SHOT: Rescue Beauty Lounge BIB4: Starfish Patrick, Insouciant, Piu Mosso, Recycle and Aqua Lily

    November 2, 2012 by pam

It’s no secret – I love Rescue Beauty Lounge. And one of the many many things I love about the brand (and its founder Ji Baek) is the BIB.

With the BIB, or Bring It Back, Ji resurrects colors that have sold out and gives new ReBeLs the chance to purchase the polish shades they’ve missed out on. For a long-time ReBeL like me, the BIB can mean becoming one step closer to my big goal – owning every single RBL color that was ever created.

Today, November 2, at noon EST, Ji will open pre-orders for BIB4. Pre-order will last for 48 hours. You should get the alert via e-mail. If you’re not yet on the RBL mailing list, head over to the RBL website, look for the Become a Rebel section and sign up.

And in case you still haven’t made up your mind on which colors you should order, here are swatches of five out of the six shades that will be returning. The sun has been elusive so these were swatched indoors. I don’t have Opaque Nude yet but I am so happy to know that thanks to this BIB, I can cross it off my wish list soon. (Glamourpuss and Om next, Ji, please?)

    bib1

    Let’s start with Starfish Patrick.

    bib-starfishpatrick1

Starfish Patrick was first released in 2008 along with two other Spongebob-themed killer jellies – Bikini Bottom and Square Pants.

    bib-starfishpatrick7

I have all three and yes, I love them all.

    bib-starfishpatrick5

Ji describes Starfish Patrick as a “sheer peachy coral.” That’s exactly what it is.

    bib-starfishpatrick12

Starfish Patrick is a buildable jelly. And because the formula is fantastic, applying multiple coats is no problem.

    bib-starfishpatrick9

    I used three coats.

    bib-starfishpatrick3

    Up next is Insouciant.

    bib-insouciant1

Released in 2011, Insouciant is one of the four fab colors of the Ironic/Iconic spring collection.

    bib-insouciant10

Ji describes it as a “toned-down dusty gray lilac.”

    bib-insouciant15

Insouciant has a subtle shimmer that gives this polish more depth.

    bib-insouciant24

I love this color so much. It’s delicate and edgy. Ji is right – it is more punk than pastel.

    bib-insouciant17

    I used two coats.

    bib-insouciant9

    Recycle.

    bib-recycle1

    Oh god, Recycle.

    bib-recycle3

This gorgeous gorgeous green, which was first released in 2008, is one of RBL’s most well-loved and most coveted shades. And I’m not surprised.

    bib-recycle19

Because the color is gorgeous. Ji describes it as a “deep blackish emerald green.”

    bib-recycle12

    It’s super glossy.

    bib-recycle6

Recycle is a super rich, super pigmented green jelly.

    bib-recycle17

And the formula is fantastic. I used two coats.

    bib-recycle7

    This is Piu Mosso.

    bib-piumosso2

Launched with the Firebird collection in 2011, Piu Mosso is pure sexiness.

    bib-piumosso3

Ji describes it as an “inky, blue-black with a flash of orange.”

    bib-piumosso11

Although the crazy flash of orange is more visible in the bottle, I love how you can see the fine sprinkling of subtle shimmer on your nails. The shimmer becomes more obvious when you’re out in the sun.

    bib-piumosso12

Piu Mosso is totally my kind of color.

    bib-piumosso24

I love wearing it as a pedi too.

    bib-piumosso13

The formula is wonderful, as we’ve come to expect from RBL.

    bib-piumosso18

It’s super rich and opaque that you can use just one coat. But I went for two.

    bib-piumosso20

    And finally, Aqua Lily.

    bib-aqualily2

    Aqua Lily!!!

    bib-aqualily11

I don’t think I’ll ever stop being excited about this color. One, because it is the dream color of my pal and fellow polish lover Kay-Di Kat.

    bib-aqualily17

And two, because it is just crazy beautiful.

    bib-aqualily12

    Crazy.

    bib-aqualily7

Ji wrote this about Aqua Lily. “A few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit the Kuda Huraa Island of the Maldives. The turquoise water is a crystal-clear sea green and what really had me spellbound was that it reflected a shimmery-pink hue from the shedding scales of the colorful, vivid, and exotic tropical fish. This color is Kay-Di Kat’s homage to her beloved mom, Lily, who swims like an enchanting mermaid. I imagine Lily swimming in this paradise with its mesmerizing water in the Island of the Maldives.”

    bib-aqualily3

I’m serious. There’s a good reason this one sold out super quickly. You need this color in your life.

    bib-aqualily13

These five shades will be available for pre-order today at noon (EST) at US$20 each. Sign up for the mailing list on RescueBeauty.com to get the alert.

  2. POLICE FILES: Polish Police’s Top 11 for 2011 (updated)

    January 1, 2012 by pam

I swear, I thought it would be a breeze. How hard would it be to pick my top 11 nail polish colors from the 2011 releases?

Very hard, it turns out. There were so many fantastic shades that came out in the past year that I seriously had trouble keeping the list down to 11. I had to be ruthless. Or I tried, at least. And because I didn’t allow myself to announce ties, I made up for it by allowing runners-up, runners-up I desperately wanted to include in the list.

2011 was a great year for polish lovers. New brands, exciting collaborations, limited edition sets and more. These were my big favorites:

    1. Dior Aloha from Dior’s Electric Tropics Collection for Summer 2011

    dior25

I still remember how giddy I was about finding this set at the airport in Manila before leaving for the US last May.

I looove the packaging. It’s so sexy.

    aloha4

Just looking at the pics now makes me feel giddy again.

    aloha11

I love that it came in a set with Dior’s awesome top coat.

    aloha8

I love that it made me fall in love with orange polish. I just wore it again a couple of weeks ago when we went to Boracay.

    aloha18

Check out my swatches of Aloha HERE.

    2. MAC Spirit of Truth and Obey Me from the Wonder Woman Collection for Spring 2011

    16

My special polish elf Petah made sure I got these bottles. He sent them to me all the way from New York. (I love you, Petah.)

    I love the packaging.

MAC Wonder Woman Obey Me + Spirit of Truth

    Adorable bottles.

MAC Wonder Woman Obey Me + Spirit of Truth

I love wearing the two colors together.

MAC Wonder Woman Obey Me + Spirit of Truth

    Superhero-worthy.

    3. Chanel Graphite, Quartz and Peridot from Chanel’s Illusion d’Ombres Collection for Fall 2011

    Chanel Graphite, Peridot, Quartz

Seriously. How can you not be in love with this gorgeousness? Just looking at the pics now makes me want to wear them all again.

Thanks to Rustan’s, I got bottles of Quartz and Graphite early.

    chanelfw12

It was love at first swatch for me.

    Chanel Quartz - two coats

    Chanel Graphite

I got Peridot a couple of months later.

    chanelperidot5

And it was instant love for us too.

    chanelperidot63

I love how unusual and original this collection is.

Check out my posts about Graphite, Quartz and Peridot HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.

    4. Dior Saint Tropez

    dior-saint-tropez

Saint Tropez was the ninja polish of the year. This shade, which was created for Dior’s Saint Tropez boutique opening, disappeared from stores before most of us even realized it was there. Sightings were reported in Las Vegas, in Europe but this polish was incredibly hard to find. Peter searched for it in New York, London and Paris and didn’t find it. Jill checked for bottles in Paris, Greece and Italy. I hit stores in Singapore. No luck. I had given up on Saint Tropez but Peter didn’t.

He found it and gave it to me on the first day we arrived in New York.

    nynp12

I couldn’t believe it was finally in my hands.

    nynp14

    I love it so much.

    nynp20

    I wore it immediately.

    nynp18

Until now, I still don’t know where Peter found it. When it comes to polish, he has super powers.

Check out my post about Dior Saint Tropez HERE.

    5. Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Firebird Collection

    15

Ji Baek created magic once again with this hurricane-inspired collection.

    Pizzicato seriously blew me away.

    firebird20

    I’m in love with it.

    firebird108

Piu Mosso is another big love of mine.

    firebird64

    It’s a killer blue.

    firebird104

And I love Poco A Poco

    firebird27

    and Fortissimo too.

    firebird83

Ji says 2012 will be a huge year for Rescue Beauty. I can’t wait!

Check out my post about the Firebirds HERE.

    6. NARS Galion for Fall 2011

    nars1

Galion is a blue-tinted deep gray shade from NARS Fall collection. It’s the only polish in the collection.

    narsfall2

Galion kept me busy for weeks.

    galion25

I kept trying to find dupes for Galion and kept failing.

    narscomp20

    narscomp7

    narscomp3

    galionblue3

    Dior Perfecto came close.

    galionvsperfecto12

    But I still don’t think it’s a perfect dupe.

    7. Butter London Wallis for Fall 2011

    _6512213

I suck. I don’t have swatches of Wallis yet, although I’ve already worn this gorgeous shade Nonie Creme created for Betsey Johnson’s Fall 2011 Collection a couple of times.

I love this tarnished gold. I promise to post swatches soon but in the meantime, here is a backstage photo from Butter London’s Facebook page:

    8. a-england’s The Mythicals

    aengland

a-england, the London-based brand created by the fabulous Adina Bodana, might just be my biggest discovery for 2011.

I started with four colors from Nail Spa – Perceval, Avalon, Lady of the Lake and Tristam.

    nailspa17

I loved every single one of them.

    aengland7

    aengland24

    aengland45

    aengland69

And I loved them so much that soon, I had the entire The Mythicals line in my collection – a lot I bought from Nail Spa, some bought from a-england’s website, one sent by Adina and the base coat and top coat from Digital Traincase.

    aengland3

    Here are more swatches.

    9. YSL Noirs Couleurs Collection for Fall 2011

    euro55

The funny thing about this collection is I had no idea it even existed until it was right in front of me.

    euro30

Jill found the collection in Athens, while vacationing in Europe last October.

    euro32

I love all three shades so much.

    Black Indigo.

    noirsysl12

    noirsysl16

    Black Bronze.

    noirsysl25

    noirsysl31

    And Black Lapis.

    noirsysl41

    noirsysl34

Jill loved these shades so much too that she ordered her own set from Nordstrom last month. The packaging is different – they came in one big box instead of three individual boxes – but the awesomeness inside in the same.

    10. Les Jeans De Chanel for Vogue’s Fashion Night Out

    dye10

When I saw Chanel’s Les Jeans De Chanel Collection for 2011′s Vogue Fashion Night Out, I knew I had to have them. While black polish will always be my first love, blue polish will always be special to me. It is, after all, what kicked off what became my crazy polish obsession.

Luckily, Petah my beloved polish elf bravely faced the FNO crowds and snagged my set for me.

    lesjeans6

I was so excited when Coco Blue, Blue Boy and Blue Rebel arrived.

    lesjeans21

    lesjeans42

    lesjeans48

I had so much fun playing with them.

    11. Deborah Lippmann’s Edge of Glory Set for Lady Gaga’s Barneys Christmas Workshop

    gaga11

This two-piece set was another wonderful surprise from the super sweet Petah. (Yes, I am so lucky to have him in my life – and not just because of polish.)

    petahgaga38

When it arrived, it didn’t disappoint. The base color was a crazy glossy black.

    petahgaga49

And the flaky top coat just made pure magic.

    petahgaga60

    Seriously, pure magic.

And here are my runners-up, the collections that would have totally been on this list too if I didn’t have to stick to 11:

    NARS Space Odyssey.

    narsholiday12

    Dior’s Mitzah Collection.

    mitzah78

    mitzah68

    Dior’s Rock Your Nails Collection.

    dior0

And NARS Night Series Collection which I will post about very very soon.

Which 11 collections/colors made it to your Top 11 list? E-mail me, post a comment, or post your list on your own blog. I’d love to see it.

    UPDATE (01/03/2012):

    Holy hell!

Today I put on Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Recherche and was admiring the beauty of it when I stopped and thought, “Wait a minute, when was this shade released?”

And I felt like fainting when I realized that it was part of RBL’s Iconic/Ironic Spring 2011 Collection.

    RBL-iconic-ironic

2011! Which means it should totally be part of my Top 11 list! Because it’s gorgeous! Along with the rest of the gorgeous colors in this collection – Decorous, Insouciant and Iconoclast! Which means instead of a Top 11 I really have a Top 15! Which means I’m hopeless! Which means I really love polish too much! And that – minus my lack of math skills (because really, 15 isn’t 11) – can actually be a good thing.
