  1. POLICE FILES: Thakoon for NARS Nail Collection

    March 30, 2012 by pam

As a huge fan of NARS, I am excited to show you this exciting collection which is set to hit stores in May.

NARS founder and creative director Francois Nars and fashion designer Thakoon Panichgul have been longtime collaborators, with their work seen on the runways of New York Fashion Week.

This time, Francois partnered with Thakoon to create a limited edition nail collection.

Thakoon, who was born in Thailand, raised in Omaha and is now based in New York, has carved a niche for himself in the ever evolving world of fashion. Spending four years as a writer and editor for Harper’s Bazaar, keeping up with the trends and churning out stories about fashion, Thakoon decided to go beyond chronicling style by creating his own designs. After studying at Parsons School of Design, presenting his first ready-to-wear collection and becoming one of the three recipients of the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund, Thakoon has developed a cult following of women who could not get enough of his feminine, modern and romantic designs.

    narsthakoon3

For NARS, Thakoon channeled his creative genius into producing six limited edition nail polish shades inspired by the vibrant colors found in Indian spice markets.

    narsthakoon1

The same vibrant colors seen in his Spring/Summer 2012 Collection.

    narsthakoon5

    narsthakoon6

    narsthakoon4

All polish shades are named after Indian spices or medicinal plants.

This is Anardana, named after the pomegranate seed which is used as an acidifying agent for curries and chutneys. It’s an azalea pink.

    narsthakoon7

This is Ratin Jot which was inspired by the alkanet root that has been used as a dye since the earliest recorded history.

    narsthakoon9

Ratin Jot is an orchid purple.

    narsthakoon8

This is Amchoor, inspired by the sour mango powder that gives fish curries tartness.

    narsthakoon11

    Amchoor is a bright yellow.

    narsthakoon10

This next shade is Kutki. It was named after the Himalayan Gentian, an endangered plant of the Himalayas. Its flowers are deep blue.

    narsthakoon13

Kutki is described as a powder blue.

    narsthakoon12

This next shade is Thakoon’s favorite from the collection. Koliary was named after Ceylon Hydrolea, a plant whose leaves have cleansing and healing effects when beaten to a pulp and applied as a poultice.

    narsthakoon15

    It’s a cyan blue.

    narsthakoon14

Also included in the collection is a shade that will only be made available at the NARS Boutique on Bleecker Street. Lal Mirchi is a gorgeous shade inspired by the red chili, the hottest flavor on earth.

    narsthakoon20

It’s a mandarin red, a color that was seen numerous times on the runway during Thakoon’s S/S 2012 show.

    narsthakoon17

    narsthakoon16

    narsthakoon18

    narsthakoon19

I need this color in my life. Actually, I need all six colors in my life.

    Q&A

In this interview with Thakoon, he talks about his inspirations, this collaboration and why he loves NARS.

    narsthakoon2

You’ve collaborated with NARS on many of your Fashion Week shows. What do you enjoy about working with the brand in creating the looks each season?

Each season, they are more open for us to play and experiment with ideas. It’s such a great collaboration because of the artistic freedom we have to express. NARS thrives on this and that’s why it’s been an amazing partnership.

How did the collaboration come about? Why was NARS the right brand to do this with?

They’ve always understood the sense of color here at Thakoon. And every season when we sat down to talk about inspiration, it became clearer and clearer that we should be doing a special product utilizing the color play. And once they saw the color board for Spring, it just made so much sense that we could be doing a nail project together.

What was your inspiration for the nail polish collection?

The colors were inspired by the amazing palette in India: the spices, the holy festival colors. It was the palette I was working on for the ready to wear collection. And we saw it as an amazing palette for nails because they’re so bold, fun and rich.

How does the nail polish collection tie into your SS12 collection?

The palette came right from the colors we did for my ready to wear collection.

Why did you choose the shades in the collection?

It was the inspiration of India, a place that is so visually colorful.

What’s your must-have shade from this collection?

I love the turquoise shade Koliary. It’s so fresh and unexpected.

How important to a woman’s look is her nail polish? What do you think a woman’s nail polish says about her?

It’s such a great form of expression of personality because it’s so simple, yet really visually powerful. Nails can be seductive, feminine, playful, edgy…all with a single change in color.

Besides the Nail Polish collection, what is your favorite NARS product?

The skincare is amazing. I religiously use the NARS Aqua Gel Hydrator.

Thakoon for NARS will be available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source in May. The colors will be up on www.narscosmetics.com beginning May 1 for $18 each.

  2. POLICE FILES: Another dose of package porn (and why Tatin should be Marvel’s next superhero)

    March 28, 2012 by pam

Dear Justice League. Or Marvel. Or D.C. Or whoever decides who can become a superhero:

I would like to nominate my friend Tatin to become your next superhero.

I am not exaggerating when I say she possesses super powers. Her special ability? Shopping.

Seriously. You can call her Super Shopper or The Incredible Shopper or Wonder Shopper or Fantastic Shopper and it would be completely justified.

I can already see her costume. A pink cape and really comfy boots. You can arm her with killer weapons – a pink credit card with no limit (yes, it has to be pink) and a shopping bag that never gets full. That shopping bag can be her superhero emblem.

    tatin

Tatin the Wonder Shopper will need a sidekick. Forget Demolition Man, let Batman keep Robin. Tatin will have the Amazing Dog Duo – Super Gucci and Mr. FantasTank.

I can already see her action figure flying off shelves. Her comic books will sell like crazy.

But you’re probably thinking – why is this person going on and on about costumes and emblems and sidekicks and action figures when she hasn’t even convinced us that Tatin should become a superhero?

    Well maybe this will work.

Tatin recently went to Korea and asked if there were any nail polish shades she should look out for. Yes!, I said. Dior Riviera, Lucky and Plaza and Chanel Distraction, Attraction and Tentation.

She didn’t find them. Those shades aren’t available in Korea yet. But she found something better.

    korea1

Yes, Dior Les Violets Hypnotiques. The trio of purples that I thought had only been released in Europe.

    And that’s not all.

    korea2

Yes, Glacier. And Icy Dew. From Dior’s Icy Halos Collection which I was prepared to wait months and months for.

    And… that’s not all.

When Tatin arrived from Korea, she handed me a shopping bag. She handed it to me minutes before we were set to watch The Hunger Games and even though she wanted me to, I refused to open the bag. I was already hyperventilating because I was about to watch the film I’ve been waiting for forever. I was worried if I opened the bag and saw the goodies, my head would explode from too much excitement. I just couldn’t handle the sensory overload.

And so I waited. I waited until I got home that night, after crying in the cinema and a post-Hunger Games pizza. And then I peeked inside the bag.

    korea3

    Whoa.

    korea4

These are wet nail protectors. Tatin said they’re to be used for typing when your nails are still wet. We couldn’t figure out how they’re used – but this video answered all our questions.

    korea5

And then this made my head explode.

    korea7

I love lunch boxes and tin boxes and own a number of them. This nail polish tin box – and how it put together two of my big loves – just blew my mind. And I’m pretty sure those bottles are Chanel.

    korea8

But we’re nowhere near done because I haven’t even shown you what’s in the box yet.

    korea9

Face masks! I love face masks and I’m amazed that Tatin knew this considering how our previous conversations about skin care went.

Tatin: “What soap do you use?”
    Me: “Whatever’s there.”
Tatin: “Di nga? What do you use to wash your face?”
Me: “The shampoo that’s running from my hair.”

I know it’s strange, considering my very guerilla approach to skin care but I do love face masks. They’re fun and relaxing and – the best part – make me look like Hannibal Lecter.

    korea6

Another tin box, this time featuring another one of my loves – chicks (and ducks).

    korea11

    There’s more.

    korea12

This is a polish remover dispenser. And because she knows my trauma from accidental polish remover leaks, Tatin said this one has a lock to avoid spillage.

    korea13

Teal glitter from Tony Moly. So pretty.

    korea14

And oh my god, look at this. Shooting Star, also from Tony Moly.

    korea16

So beautiful. The milky pink base and the colorful glitter remind me of guinomis, one of my favorite Filipino desserts. I can’t wait to see this on my nails.

    korea15

I gasped when I pulled these out. I didn’t know Etude House made magnetic polish!

    korea17

I’m excited to swatch these too! (And I promise to keep you posted about the arrival of Mag Play in the Philippines.)

    korea18

    Nope, not yet done.

    korea19

Another love – lip and cheek tint! Can’t wait to try this too.

    korea20

And finally, the beautiful new Diors. Yes, my fingerprints are all over the caps because I couldn’t stop touching them. That’s how pretty they are.

    korea25

    The purples.

    korea21

    Orchid, Poison, Shadow.

    korea22

    And Icy Dew and Glacier.

    korea24

    I love them all.

Tatin attacks shopping missions with all her might. She has a knack for finding things that shouldn’t be there, the ability to read minds and find out exactly what you want before you even know it and her shopping instincts are unbeatable. She can rock your world with one shopping bag.

And that is why I think Tatin should become your next superhero.

  3. POLICE FILES: Miss Bun’s big dose of polish love

    March 20, 2012 by pam

If you’ve been reading Polish Police for a while now, then you know about my special friendship with Miss Bun. (You can read about it HERE, HERE, HERE,HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE. Done? Crazy, right?)

She was away for over half a year (she was in China shooting a film) and with her being so busy on set and her internet connection being spotty, we hardly talked. I missed her terribly. I swear, the polish world isn’t complete without my nail twin. I was so happy when she finally returned to Hong Kong. We’ve been having a blast catching up and sending each other hilarious e-mails.

When I heard that Giff was going to Hong Kong with his family, I knew I had to ask if he’d be willing to bring a package for Miss Bun. Luckily, he said yes. I was thrilled not just because Miss Bun would finally get her goodies but because she’d meet one of my best friends. (It’s funny how she’s met a number of special people in my life while we haven’t really met in person yet.)

That’s what we do – we send each other crazy packages. You can’t call what we do swapping. There’s no, “What can I trade for this?,” no calculations. We just enjoy checking out each other’s wish lists and picking out bottles we think the other would love.

I had so much fun putting together Bun’s package. I found this awesome cabinet-shaped box with little drawers that were perfect for sliding bottles of polish in. Now we normally don’t tell each other what we’re sending but I had to break the tradition this time because Miss Bun’s wish list wasn’t updated and I didn’t want to send duplicates.

Her reply to my e-mail was hilarious.

WHAT ARE YOU, AT MY HOUSE OR SOMETHING?!?!?
HOW is it possible that I don’t have ANY of these that you listed??????

    That made me so happy.

One night while he was in Hong Kong, Giff sent me this text message:

    Mission accomplished!

And then I saw an e-mail from Miss Bun. She met up with Giff on her way to a film premiere and she couldn’t open the package yet. Here’s a hilarious excerpt:

I am DYING because I CAN’T OPEN THIS. I AM NOW GOING THROUGH WHAT YOU WENT THROUGH THAT ONE TIME. WTF.

I CAN’T open this right now but I CAN SEE WHAT SEEMS TO BE A FRIGGIN CABINET.

    WTF.

Days later, Giff was back in Manila. And he brought this back for me.

    bun1

I love how Miss Bun wrote different permutations of my name around the box. So funny. In the year and a half that we’ve known each other, she’s given me so many nicknames that I can’t count them anymore.

    bun2

I ripped the box open (sorry but I was excited!) and saw this crazy cow staring up at me.

    bun3

I turned it over and laughed when I read the words “SEXY LIFESTYLE.” Too freaking funny.

    bun4

I read Miss Bun’s note. I love love love that Instax pic.

    bun5

This beautiful pile of amazingness stared up at me. I didn’t know where to start.

    bun6

    I picked one up.

    bun7

NARS Versailles! Love. This has been on my list forever.

    bun8

I love love love the little notes Bun put on each surprise.

    bun9

    bun10

Barielle Thrilling. Gorgeous. An awesome red from the queen of red polish.

    bun11

The beautiful patterns on these notes were totally rocking my paper fetish.

    bun12

    bun13

Rimmel Steel Grey. Such a pretty taupe!

    bun14

Miss Bun knows I love blues.

    bun15

And she’s right – Sally Hansen Blue-Away is the perfect sky blue. So beautiful. I loved this so much I immediately put it on after opening the package.

    bun16

    Holy crap.

    bun17

She’s right! I wanted this forever! Butter London’s No More Waity, Katie.

    bun18

Now this is just crazy special.

    bun19

Especially since Bun gave me my first bottles of Anna Sui. Anna Sui 100.

    bun21

At this point, I was so overwhelmed by the number of bottles that I had to take a break. Giff, Jill, Jill’s nephews and nieces and I were having a pool party. Jill was in charge of grilling hotdogs (and marshmallows), Giff was making mini blueberry cheesecakes and banana chocolate chip muffins and I made slutty brownies.

    Slutty brownies

While the brownie pans were in the oven, I returned to my box of awesomeness.

    bun22

I picked this up. And when I realized what bottle was hiding inside, I laughed out loud.

    bun23

    NARS Orgasm.

    bun24

    Hilarious.

    bun26

Bun’s not kidding – she know exactly which shades I’d love.

    bun27

And she knew I’d fall for this dusty blue. Color Club Gossip Column.

    bun28

    Another Anna Sui!

    bun29

    bun30

Anna Sui 902. Love. So sad that they’re changing the bottle shape – I think it’s adorable. (Okay wait, I just checked what the new bottles look like and they’re pretty too!)

    bun31

Ooh, top coat! (Let me digress: I apologize for my peeling hands. They peel once a year and look hella ugly but it’s totally worth it because I get baby smooth skin after.)

    bun32

Essie No Chips Ahead. So excited to try this!

    bun33

    This is amazing.

    bun34

When I opened this and saw that it was a bottle of Sparitual, one word instantly popped into my head: HOWL. And yes, that’s what it is, Sparitual Howl. How did Bun know I wanted this?!

    bun35

I love love love lip products too.

    bun36

And when I opened this, I thought, “Holy cow!” Because I love anything minty, I love C.O. Bigelow and I love their lip balms and glosses but I’ve never tried the tinted ones. Serious serious love. I will carry this in my bag every single day.

    bun37

    So sweet.

    bun38

Borghese Stellare Notte. What a beauty. I’ve seen other polish fans rave about this and I cannot wait to wear it.

    bun39

Yes, we are over the top. And proud of it.

    bun40

Essie Over The Top. Now that’s just sexy.

    bun41

These are bottles Bun picked up on her recent trip to L.A.

    bun42

She never ceases to amaze me with her knack for choosing polish shades I would love. Ulta Little Black Dress and Army of 1.

    bun43

    There’s more. Crazy, I know.

    bun44

American Apparel The Valley. Serious love.

    bun45

I love that Bun ended up loving Barielle.

    bun46

I’ve been obsessing over gunmetal shades and Snow Day just rocks my boat.

    bun47

Now Bun and I aren’t ashamed of our love for Justin Bieber.

    bun48

Why should we be? He’s a great kid.

    bun49

Aqua. Green. Jelly. Those words are enough to capture my heart.

    bun50

    So pretty. L.A. Colors Atomic.

    bun51

    SQUEAL.

    bun52

    Deborah Lippmann Stormy Weather. Looooove.

    bun53

    There’s one more.

    bun54

NARS Tokaido Express. So gorgeous. Another lemming killed by Bun.

    bun55

    And here’s a group shot.

    bun56

And you know what I’ll treasure just as much as these lovely bottles? These crazy sweet notes from Miss Bun.

    bun57

So much love in one fantastic package.

Thank you thank you thank you, Miss Bun. For the package, the surprises, the notes, the sweetness, the love, the friendship. And thank you, Giff, for bringing these goodies home.

    I’m high on polish love.

  4. POLICE FILES: Nail mail! Faz’s box of love

    March 16, 2012 by pam

This is one of my favorite things to receive in the mail.

    faz1

Because this only means one thing – there’s a package with my name on it and it’s waiting to be claimed.

The next day, I trooped over to the post office, not sure exactly what I was picking up.

A man went into the storage room and emerged with a small box. I was trying to figure out where the box came from but everything was blurry because I forgot my glasses at home.

They wanted to inspect the box. I shrugged. One of the other post office people sliced the box open and said, “Pampa-beauty!” I tried squinting but I still couldn’t see what was written on the box.

But soon I could stop squinting because the box was finally in my hands.

    faz2

It was the package from Faz, the one she thought would take forever to get here. (Newsflash: it didn’t.)

Faz, a writer who lives in Singapore but spends her days globetrotting, is one of my favorite people in the world. She’s awesome and sweet and she’s so much fun. You first read about Faz when I posted about how she surprised me with Greta from the Make Up Store and how we enjoyed a few crazy days in Spain back in 2009.

Faz is currently in Boracay with her boyfriend John. I am so happy that she’s getting the chance to explore one of my favorite places in the Philippines. And I think it’s pretty cool that the package arrived while she’s still here – even though I won’t get to see her during her visit, I’m still feeling the Faz love.

I don’t know about you but I love package porn. I brought the package to my office so I could document the unboxing.

    faz3

    Purple!

    faz5

    Love.

    faz6

    Inside was this card.

    faz7

That girl is Cinderella illustrated by Korean artist Chun Eunsil.

    faz8

I read the note from Faz.

    faz9

So sweet. And I super love her penmanship.

    faz10

I love love love this ribbon. The colors are adorable.

    faz11

    First place, baby.

    faz18

    More goodies in the box.

    faz12

And I love love love the pretty pink and sparkly shreds and potpourri that Faz lined the box with.

    faz13

This is Deborah Lippmann’s Good Girl Gone Bad which Faz ordered for me from Luxola.com, a Singapore-based online beauty shop.

    faz19

I’ve been on a glitter kick these past weeks and I cannot wait to wear this beauty.

Here’s a lip gloss, a welcome dose from H&M. (I miss that place so much.) I cannot wait to try this too. It looks sexy.

    faz22

And there’s Sally Hansen Salon Effects Frock Star which is crazy pretty. I will save this for a special occasion – one that needs major sparkle.

    faz25

No, Coin Bank Chick, they’re not yours. They’re mine.

    faz14

But I couldn’t blame her. If I fit in this box, I’d dive into it too.

    faz16

Thank you so much, Faz, for the fab surprise, the box of love and for rocking my Thursday. I hope you’re having a blast at the beach.

Check out Faz’s website The Drama Diaries.

  5. POLICE FILES: Chanel, Dior, RBL, Illamasqua, my blog sale and other nail polish news

    March 13, 2012 by pam

    CHANEL

I still haven’t taken the Chanel Attraction-Tentation-Distraction plunge (I’m on the edge though, trust me) and now there are even more Chanel shades to go crazy for. Chanel Holiday, Delight and Island for Summer 2012. I definitely want Holiday and Delight. I’m still unsure about Island. You can see swatches of Island here.

    chanelsummer

Then there’s Chanel Frenzy, which is set to come out for Fall. Oh good lord I want this one.

chanel frenzyFantastic photo by Vincent Lappartient

This polish will be released with another shade called Vertigo. You can see it in Style.com’s backstage interview with Peter Philips which was posted by Cafe Makeup. Keep your eyes open because they only appear for a few seconds – and check out the Lotus Rouge-looking red shade that you’ll see on the right part of the screen. I’m not sure if that’s a new shade too.

Two (maybe three) more polishes to add to the list of Chanels I’m waiting to be released. Diwali, Skyline, Holiday, Delight, Frenzy, Vertigo. Hurry up, please.

    DIOR

    Dior. Dior Dior Dior.

I’m still waiting for the trio of violets and I am dying to get my hands on Lucky, Riviera and Plaza and now there are more Diors to covet.

Yes, they are releasing Saint Tropez again. It will come out with the Summer Collection. And, good news for people who already own Saint Tropez, it will be released with Bikini, another covetable shade.

I thought it was crazy when YSL released crackle shades late in the game. But apparently, it can get crazier. Because there’s another player who wants to join the crackle fun.

Believe it or not, I mean Dior.

When Polish Police reader April sent me a link about this on Twitter, my first reaction was, “If Dior releases crackle, I’m going to cry.”

Yes, it looks like Dior will be releasing crackle sets to create the crocodile look.

    diorcroc

And although at this point I am really over crackle, and although I was able to resist the YSL ones, I really think I’m going to have to pick this up. I’ve become a slave to Dior.

    RESCUE BEAUTY

The much-awaited RBL Fan Collection was finally unveiled a few days ago with the help of four bloggers – Kellie Gonzo, Rie of Nails and Noms, Scrangie and All Lacquered Up. Go click click click and check out the swatches. I love all four shades and will be ordering them as soon as they’re available. Congratulations to the RBL fans whose dream colors became a reality (hey hey KayDi Kat!) and to Ji who made it possible.

    ILLAMASQUA

I am loving Human Fundamentalism, Illamasqua’s newest collection and campaign. I love that the brand encourages individuality, creativity, self-expression and non-conformity. Illamasqua Creative Director Alex Box said, “You are your own human hybrid, a unique nomad of street cultures and global trends.”

    I love that.

And as someone with purple-pink hair and crazy eyebrows, I embrace that.

I love the images from the collection – they are colorful and captivating.

    illa2

    illa4

    illa3

    illa1

I also love the two nail varnish shades released with the collection – Nomad (bright jade) and Stance (bright mauve).

And here’s the cool thing – Illamasqua has launched Illamasqua Socialise, an interactive website where you can meet and talk to members of the Illamasqua team and other Illamasqua fans, post swatches and reviews, explore how-tos, watch videos and more.

Illamsaqua also has some special offers available. There’s the Nails Gift Set – choose any nail varnish you want (yes, including Nomad or Stance) and you can get it with a base coat and a top coat for just £30.00. And the Lips Gift Set which allows you to choose a lipstick and a sheer lipgloss for £25.00.

The Human Fundamentalism Collection is now ready for pre-order and will be available on March 15.

    DEBORAH LIPPMANN

I know I know, I’m late to the fall glitter party but you can’t blame me – it just arrived in the Philippines a few weeks ago. I’ve been having so much fun with the glitter but I can’t show you yet.

Why not? Because last week, I decided to cut my nails super short again. Like I said before, I know they’re not great for swatching but I really love having super short nails. I figured I had enough swatches ready for posting until they grow again.

When I cut my nails, I decided to do an insane mani – two coats of Deborah Lippmann It’s Raining Men and a lot of coats of Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? The result was insanely sparkly red nails that I just couldn’t stop looking at. You know how much I loved my mani? I wore it for five days! Five freaking days!

And today, I decided to bring out Dior NY 57th and topped it with two coats of I Love The Nightlife. The result? Sparkly gunmetal gray nails. Love.

Now I must pick up Shake Your Groove Thing so I can do a crazy sparkly gold mani.

Here’s a quick pic of my thumb with my It’s Raining Men + Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? mani but it seriously doesn’t do it justice.

    p

The crazy thing about Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? is how it sparkles when your hand moves (even indoors!). It’s almost electric. And sadly, my photos couldn’t capture the magical sparkle. You have to see it. I loved it so much I put it in my Top Twelve. (Yes, I couldn’t stick to ten. Sorry.)

I know we have more Deborah Lippmann coming our way soon (I am waiting for On The Beach and Mermaid’s Dream and anything else that will hit Rustan’s shelves).

    POLISH POLICE

It’s time to admit it – my nail polish collection has grown out of control. I have more untrieds than colors I’ve already worn and I have brands I’ve never even touched. I made two decisions:

    1. I have decided that I need to streamline my collection. I don’t want to hold on to bottles forever if I know I will most likely never get around to wearing them. I want to find them good homes. So yes, I will be holding my first blog sale. I have my first batch of bottles ready for selling but I actually wanted to do one-finger swatches so you can see the actual color and not just the bottle color. But I haven’t gotten around to that yet. And because I nubbinized my nails, it might take a couple of weeks before I can start swatching. If you are excited to see which colors I will have for sale and don’t want to wait for me to swatch them, post a comment below or e-mail me so I can e-mail you the list. (I should tell you now that my favorite brands Chanel, Dior, RBL, NARS, Deborah Lippmann, etc. will not be on the list – I cannot cannot cannot bear to part with them). For now, my blog sale will only be available to people in the Philippines. Shipping polish internationally would mean crazy costs – I’m pretty sure you’ll end up spending more on shipping than on the polish and that’s just bananas.

    2. I will try to make a bigger dent in my pile of untrieds. And to achieve that, yesterday, I rearranged my new Helmer (the new one is white, the old one is red). My bottles are still organized by brand but this time, I separated the untrieds from the ones I’ve already worn. And swatching doesn’t count as wearing. If I haven’t worn it as a full manicure, it stays on my list of untrieds. I’m excited about the new way my bottles are stored – it will make choosing which polish to wear next a lot easier.
