Taylor Lautner arrived in Manila during a really crazy week. I had been running around like a headless chicken, juggling articles I had to write, interviews I needed to do, a talk I had to give, events and meetings I had to attend, my stressful passport renewal and more but I knew I had to make time for one important thing: my special Taylor Lautner mani.
I knew I wanted to wear Glam Polish‘s Star Candy (more on this amazing glitter shade in a bit). I grabbed one of my favorite whites and it was only days after that I realized how fitting my choice was: I had picked RBL Bella. Yes, it took me a while to realize the Twilight connection – see what I mean when I say it was a crazy week?
Bench was holding a press conference for Taylor at Makati Shangri-la’s ballroom but before that, I also had a one-on-one interview with the actor. I walked into the Pasay A function room and there he was, waiting.

Sadly, he took no notice of my nails. Instead, he focused on my shoes – the bronze Doc Martens that I bought a few months ago. They’re already so beaten up because I couldn’t stop wearing them.
I sat down and he reached out to touch my right boot, his finger drawing a tiny line on the leather. “Ooh, look at those shoes. Nice!” he said. Listen to the moment HERE and please ignore how stupid and giggly I sound. You shouldn’t be surprised though – proximity to those abs will do that to you.
And it wasn’t just his abs. He was also so incredibly nice and grounded, something you don’t always see in Hollywood hotties. I walked away liking him even more than I already did.
But enough about Taylor Lautner. We need to talk about glitter.
First, a confession: I do not have too many indies in my Helmers. I have a handful of Lynnderellas and some Shimmer Polish – that’s it. I know there are a ton of amazing indie brands out there but I’ve been trying to stop myself from really getting into them. It’s a slippery slope, a slippery slope that can drain your bank account. Lord knows I already spend way too much money on polish and getting hooked on hunting down those glittery bottles might mean I’d have to soon start selling my kidneys. And I’m not ready to part with either of my kidneys.
But when I saw a photo of Star Candy by Glam Polish, an Australian indie brand, I just couldn’t resist. And when Tatin and I realized that it was a Mei Mei’s Signatures exclusive, we decided to order a bottle each. Mei Mei’s Signatures is based in Singapore – not too far from Manila – so we figured the shipping costs wouldn’t be crazy.
Our package arrived during the beginning of that insane week.
I wanted to wear it immediately but couldn’t. All I could do was tear into the package and stare at the bottle of Star Candy for a second before going back to work.
But I am happy to say that I’ve now had ample time to play with Star Candy. Forgive me for the abundance of photos. It’s just so freaking pretty. Look.
Star Candy is a mix of bright yellow, green, blue and pink star, hexagon and square glitter in different sizes set in an untinted base. The tiny pink and blue glitter scattered throughout the bottle also adds a nice touch. Star Candy reminds me of kiddie art projects and I love it so much. I couldn’t wait to layer it over different colors.
Like a lot of chunky glitter polish, I had to use the fish-out-and-dab method for applying Star Candy. The bigger glitter pieces had a tendency to sink to the bottom of the bottle and because I wanted a number of stars on my nails, I had to fish them out. Rolling the bottle also helped. For all the swatches you will see in this post, what I did was first swipe on a coat of Star Candy over my chosen base polish, leaving tiny pink and blue glitter and some hexagon and square pieces on the nails before fishing out the stars and dabbing them on. I really liked the effect of the tiny pink and blue glitter too and I loved that there was a lot of them. They’re crazy pretty. Although it was tempting not to swipe the brush against the bottle lip after fishing out glitter (because the more polish on your brush, the more glitter you get), I had to be careful in making sure I didn’t pile on the clear base because the result would be a super thick, dent-prone mani. Star Candy is worth the effort – I really really love it. In fact, I’m still wearing it now.
I had a number of different colors I wanted to layer Star Candy over and I started with white.
I know I used RBL Bella for my Taylor Lautner mani but Bella is an off-white. I wanted to use a stark white so I chose Priti NYC’s White Ballet Dahlia.
I really liked the result – such a fun and happy mani. This combo made me realize that Star Candy’s base isn’t completely clear – it’s a little cloudy, turning the very white White Ballet Dahlia into a slightly off-white shade. Still very pretty. And it looks good glossy or matte.
I wanted to layer Star Candy over a soft yellow too, so I chose the yellow from the NARS x Pierre Hardy Sharks set and RBL’s Square Pants.
I went for two colors because I planned to use the NARS as a base and then Square Pants to create a jelly sandwich.
Here it is over NARS Sharks Left.
And here is my NARS Sharks Left + Star Candy + Square Pants combo.
I thought a pale blue would also be a great match for Star Candy so I brought out NARS Kutki and RBL Bikini Bottom.
I liked how this turned out too. I liked it even more than the yellow.
The jelly sandwich wasn’t as obvious though. In retrospect, I should have added another layer of Bikini Bottom on top.
I knew I couldn’t end this post without layering Star Candy over black. I brought out a-england Camelot.
And when I saw how it looked against black, I went, “WOWZA.”
And just like the White Ballet Dahlia + Star Candy mix, Star Candy + Camelot looks great with a matte top coat too.
I am not done playing with Star Candy. I can’t wait to layer it over pink, purple and red. Star Candy has single-handedly gotten me hooked on Glam Polish. I’ve been checking out their site and have been going crazy. I was so excited to see they’ve done a collection inspired by Despicable Me. I am currently obsessing over Fraggle Rock, Leapfrog, Pacman, Ba-na-na!!!, Mars Attacks!, Juggling Jupiter, Total Eclipse, Neon Nubs and Fern Gully. I think I need to add those bottles to my Helmer soon.
