MUG SHOT: Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Blogger 2.0 Collection (swatches and comparisons)

June 25, 2013 by pam

Rescue Beauty Lounge’s first blogger collection gave us the killer purple-and-green trio of Scrangie, Mismas and Polish Addict’s Orbis Non Sufficit. This time, for Blogger 2.0, RBL is releasing twice as many shades. RBL founder Ji Baek worked with five nail bloggers (plus “an accidental interloper”) to bring to you this new collection.

I am honored to be a part of the lineup (read about the birth of Liberty here) and to help unveil the collection today.

Let’s start with Scrangie 2.0

Ji said: “Naturally, I tagged Queen Scrangie first, who can forget what we’ve made together already? And, of course, she wanted that elusive nailpolish-goliath. A black oil slick with a multifaceted ring visible in lowlight. I, too, have had this effect on my wish list for as long as I can remember. We tried unconventional raw materials that failed miserably after months of mixing. After six intense months, the end result is a polish that contains isolated oil rings, it is the color of an oil base that floats on water with rainbow sparkles, it shifts from shade to shade depending on the light that is cast on it.”

I am a huge fan of Scrangie’s first RBL color so I was really excited to see her new shade.

It did not disappoint.

Scrangie 2.0 is a complex shade – a beautiful bronze-brown-olive green metallic sparkly polish that I couldn’t wait to wear.

I love it.

Great formula too.

I used two coats.

And because I’m sure you’re curious to see how it compares to other RBLs, I pulled out these bottles from my collection.

Ghost is a lot more brown, Turn It Around is a lot more green and has that crazy copper glitter and Anne is darker and has those pretty iridescent sparkles that are just so pretty.

Up next is Kellie Gonzo.

Ji said: “Kellie luves her sparkles and glittahs. She wanted a pink-coral happiness that captures her bright, sunny, and bubbly personality; a color that shoots out with her warm-hearted twinkles. At first, I made her the most intense bright coral that we both fell hard for, but then, its legal neon pigments started separating, making the polish a big, hot mess. This color took the longest to color match, it pushes on the edge of bright pink coral without adding any neon pigments— and I can feel Kellie’s smile beaming from the bottle—it’s so her.”

Kellie Gonzo is such a happy color.

It’s a nice bright sparkly coral.

Kellie’s bubbly personality really does shine through in her blog – and I was happy to see that her polish reflected that.

Lovely formula.

I used two coats.

The rainy season has started in my part of the world but thanks to Kellie Gonzo, my nails will get the dose of summer they’ve been craving.

Can’t wait to rock this as a pedi too.

I brought out these shades for comparison.

Coral is slightly brighter and has no sparkle, Smile is deeper and a lot more pink and Poppy is a lot more red.

Up next is Liberty, which is my color.

Ji said: “From the opposite time zone on the other side of the globe, Pammy and I worked together on Facetime to race against the clock. She has a true-blue infatuation with Pizzicato and she demanded Pizzicato’s mint-green sister. Of course, I had to add a pinch of blue shimmer here and there to make it—sister worthy. Our most hilarious and surprising moment came when it was time to name her polish—she actually choked! Yup, our Pammy, one of my favorite authors. She thought naming the polish would be easy and fun—she now knows my pain. But this name is spot on—I see an image of the majestic Lady Liberty gleaming with reflective glass-flecks, shimmering on a warm, sunny day while I stand on the deck of the Staten Island Ferry, my hair blowing wildly against the wind, mesmerized by her presence and the symbol for what she represents.”

Pizzicato meets her long-lost sibling.

Yes, I am in love with Liberty.

I love that it looks different under different lights – sometimes looking like a bright mint, sometimes looking like a more subdued sage green.

I love the glass flecks too – they are so pretty.

I have worn this shade for days and I still can’t stop staring.

It really has been a dream come true.

Love the formula too.

I used two coats.

For more pictures and the full story behind Liberty, please check out my other post.

I pulled out Bikini Bottom, Halcyon and Diddy Mow to compare.

Bikini Bottom is a jelly and way more blue, Halcyon is a darker, dirtier green with pretty glitter and Diddy Mow is a darker grayed out green that I am still in love with after years of using it.

This is NailsandNoms.

Ji said: “If you’ve read Rie’s blog, you know she’s an orange lover and the lady wished to have a turquoise shimmer or glitter mixed into a bright orange base. However, the vision she had in mind made my already terrible potty-mouth even filthier. The turquoise glitter/ shimmer she requested bled into the base, which turned the sherbert-like bright orange base into a canned-pumpkin color, which I do not share kinship with (neither did Rie). Three months into it, I finally got it. Rie loved it and I sent it to the lab. A few weeks later, I was mixing something else and I thought—what the *eek is that? Well, the blues ran the orange into a muddy imbroglio again, making the pigments unstable. I quickly reworked the game plan, I actually hunted down and brought in the orange sherbet of my childhood, you know, the kind in a tub with swirls of different colors and added a mélange of periwinkle, pink and orange shimmer to float on the glaze without loosing the integrity of the bright orange. True story, “Rie” stands for Marie Antoinette, so we say—let them eat sherbet!”

Hurry, bring out the sunglasses!

NailsandNoms is a bright bright orange that will just grab your attention.

It’s that brightness that will draw you in but the shimmer that will keep you gaping.

It’s an instant party on your nails.

Such a fun, crazy color.

Great formula. I used two coats.

I brought out Santa Fe and Starfish Patrick to compare.

Starfish Patrick is a pale jelly coral while Santa Fe is a reddish brown-tinged orange. Neither of the two shades come close to the brightness of NailsandNoms.

Up next is Fashion Polish.

Ji said: “I’ve never worked with anyone who had actually mixed (frankened) nail polish before. When Sam and I were DM-ing each other, this made me nervous; I was humbled and excited. It was refreshing to know that she had her own technical challenge. She wanted to incorporate her deep affection for black base nail polish with gold and red glitters. The black pigment’s weight issue with the floating glitter ratio was indeed a challenge for me as well. Sam sent me a photo of a breathtaking sunset that bleeds into the golden sunlight. Red clouds coattail into the blackest of the night. I mixed six versions of the color and shipped it to her home in France, ridiculously wishing that I, too, could shrink and sneak into her shipping box and be whisked away to France.”

I’m a huge fan of black polish so this was instant love for me.

I love the crazy sparkle too. I love that there’s a lot of glitter with each brushstroke, no need to worry about fishing them out.

I love that the base is opaque but it still lets the pretty glitter shine through.

It’s glittery but not over the top – so you can wear it at work but you can also rock it at a party.

Great formula.

I used three coats.

I brought out Iconoclast and Black Russian to compare.

Iconoclast is a shimmery black, Black Russian is a super glossy black with fiery red glitter.

And the last color of the collection – An Accidental Interloper.

Ji said: “Who is the nail blogger behind this color? ’Tis I, an interloper who is not a nail blogger–shameless I know. When we were in the beginning stages of mixing Liberty, Pammy mentioned that we needed some kind of silver in our RBL family. For me, making a unique silver color was an obstacle I had yet to solve for many years. I have numerous bottles in my RBL cemetery drawers sitting there like rejected sleeping beauties. Yet, it was impossible to stop my hands and my foolish heart from trying again. I mixed, searched my polish graveyard, reawakened, remixed and re-married pigments to achieve this silver goddess with an edge faceted by multi-shimmer hues. It’s a silver palette I can embrace as a part of the RBL family. Please forgive me??”

An Accidental Interloper is a silvery gunmetal polish.

It’s like armor for your nails.

I have been longing for a silver from RBL so I’m really happy that Ji created this.

Great formula too.

Application was easy-peasy.

I used two coats.

I compared this with Iconoclast, Concrete Jungle and Stormy.

Iconoclast is a shimmery black, Concrete Jungle is a blue-tinged gray creme and Stormy is a dark gray creme.

Now here’s the funny thing: during the early stages of this collection, I had three dream colors in mind – an orange, a silver and Liberty. And now, thanks to Ji’s magic and Rie’s imagination, it’s like all three dream colors came true.

More swatches on these great blogs: Fashion Polish, Kellie Gonzo, Nails and Noms, Scrangie.

  1. Alisha says:

Sooo beautiful. I have fallen in love with all of them! :) thank you so much for the comparisons.

  2. Rie says:

Gorgeous swatches Pammy! I love all of your comparisons with other beauties from RBL! ^_^

  3. Natalie says:

Thanks for comparing the other RBLs! I was dying to see how Kellie Gonzo’s coral compared to RBL Coral!
I love your colour; I am sure that it will be the next elusive ‘Scrangie’!!
One question: how brushstrokey is the silver? It seems to be brushstrokey in all the blogs’ pics. Argh!…

    • pam says:

Thanks Natalie! :) When new collections come out, I always wonder how they look in comparison to the existing colors. I know I’m not the only one so I really enjoy swatching those comparisons :)

I’m so glad you like Liberty! And An Accidental Interloper isn’t brushstrokey – with some metallic polish you have to be careful with every swipe because it will show but not this one. You know how some silvers are so unforgiving that they show every ridge of the nails? This isn’t like that at all :)

  4. Congrats, Pam and all the other lovely ladies!

  5. kelliegonzo says:

wow LOVE your swatches! and thanks for the comparisons of KG, i was planning on doing some but maybe now i don’t need too ;) i’m happy to be included in a group with a talented lady like yourself!

  9. Jangsty says:

  10. Pat says:

Liberty is wonderful! Green is my favorite color, even in nail polish. I’ve yet to try RBL, but I think Liberty will be one of my firsts.

    • pam says:

So glad you like Liberty! I love green polish too! And if you love green polish, you need to try RBL – the brand has released some of my all-time favorite greens: Recycle, Turn It Around, Orbis Non Sufficit. :)

  11. Jo Anne says:

Hello! Are your bottle line-up pictures in the same order as the colors are on your nails? If not, can you please label them? I’m making myself crazy trying to figure out which is what! :D

    • pam says:

      Hope this helps! :)

  12. Kristine says:

I love your swatches, especially your comparisons.

I am in love with the idea of this line as well as the colors. Nail bloggers have played such a big role in getting people to look at boutique polishes that it makes sense for designers to use you as resources. Great collaborative effort.

I can’t even imagine having my own color – I’d be so excited I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

After looking at this not only do I want the new colors, I now want Black Russian desperately!

    • pam says:

Thanks, I’m glad you like them :)

And I think RBL did a great thing in turning our dream colors into reality – it was a great experience.

I felt the same way, when I first found out, I went completely nuts. It took hours before I could calm myself down enough to start really thinking about colors.

And yes!!! Haha! Black Russian blew me away while I was swatching! I think I’ve been so focused on new collections the past months that I’ve forgotten about some of the gems already hiding in my Helmer. Can’t wait to rediscover more of them. And I will definitely post them :)

  13. Kris says:

Hi there I just wanted to say I stopped by your blog & am now going to follow it!!! I love the way you compared all the colors because I was actually on the sight to order from the preorder & kept trying to go back & forth to see what some of the differences in some colors were & it was so much easier to see on your blog!!! Thanks so much

  14. Aracelis says:

Congratulations Pammy! Liberty is a phenomenal color!!! And thank you SO much for the comparisons, I can always rely on your lovely swatches to make up my mind on certain colors. Thanks to you I will now own Coral & Black Russian. Congrats again! ;)
