MUG SHOT: Getting nekkid with Cult Nails

February 28, 2012 by pam

Here’s the solid truth – I cannot cannot cannot fall in love with another brand. I’ve had my hands full juggling the numerous brands I already adore. So even though I’ve heard great things about Cult Nails from countless fans, I’ve held out on placing an order.

Cult Nails is the nail polish brand created by nail blogger Maria Morrison who runs R3 Daily.

Luckily, Digital Traincase has started selling bottles of the brand so polish addicts in the Philippines will have easier access to Maria’s creations. And because of Digital Traincase, I finally got the chance to try Cult Nails.

Today I will show you the five colors from Cult Nails’ Let’s Get Nekkid Collection.

cult1

The idea for the collection hit Maria while was sleeping. She had a dream that she created nail polish colors inspired by the different skin tones of her family members. She turned that dream into reality, releasing four shades inspired by the skin color of people who are dear to her along with a limited edition glittery green.

cult3

Let’s start with Mazo.

cult4

Mazo is a sheer light beige.

cult7

Check out that pretty gold shimmer.

cult5

Mazo was inspired by Maria’s mom.

cult10

Based on the early swatch on Maria’s blog, I think she meant for this shade to be worn sheer.

cult11

But I never wear sheer polish so I used three coats (sorry, Maria!).

cult13

The color built up nicely.

cult26

The formula was lovely.

cult16

No streaking, no problems.

cult24

Note that even though these shades were inspired by skin colors, they were not meant to give you mannequin hands. “They’re more of an enhancement,” Maria wrote on her blog.

cult27

This is Baker.

cult30

Baker is a peachy beige.

cult31

Again, check out the gold shimmer.

cult32

This color was inspired by Maria’s own skin tone.

cult33

This is a color you should whip out when you’re rocking a tan.

cult34

I love how the gold shimmer gives this shade depth.

cult51

Once again, lovely formula.

cult44

Smooth and streak-free.

cult42

I used three coats.

cult38

This is Tulum.

cult63

Tulum is a light milk chocolate brown.

cult62

Once again, gape at the gold shimmer.

cult64

This shade was inspired by one of Maria’s cousins.

cult65

I love taupey shades like this.

cult67

Because yeah, edgy neutrals rock.

cult85

This is the kind of shade you can wear to the office and then out to a party.

cult78

It’s pretty.

cult83

Lovely formula.

cult79

I used two coats.

cult73

This is Swanbourne.

cult88

Swanbourne is a deep deep chocolate brown. This is the darkest shade in the collection.

cult89

Check out the gold glitter.

cult90

This shade was inspired by Maria’s beloved Grandpa Al.

cult93

This is one of my favorites from the collection.

cult95

I like how dark it is.

cult100

I like that extra gold sparkle.

cult115

I like the formula too.

cult112

Like the other shades in this collection, it’s super smooth.

cult107

Hassle-free application.

cult102

I used two coats.

cult116

And finally, Toxic Seaweed.

cult119

This polish is pure craziness.

cult120

Crazy glitter and flakies set in a blue-green jelly base.

cult121

I decided to see if Toxic Seaweed can be worn alone.

cult125

And the answer is hell yes.

cult122

It was opaque after four coats.

cult133

If you don’t have the patience to go for four coats, no worries. Toxic Seaweed would work great as a top coat too.

cult136

I think it would look fab over a green or a black.

cult145

Now here’s the thing. Toxic Seaweed is a limited edition.

cult146

The flakies you see in the polish are no longer available. Maria will not be able to reproduce this shade.

cult157

So if you love it, you must grab it now.

cult147

If you’re in the Philippines, you can purchase these shades from Digital Traincase at ₱450 each. If you’re anywhere else in the world, you can get your bottles directly from Cult Nails at $10 each. Like Cult Nails on Facebook or follow the brand on Twitter.

Yay! I’m so glad you finally got to try some Cults! I have only worn Baker and Mazo so far but your swatches have me wanting to wear the others sooner than later. Since St. Patrick’s day in the States is around the corner, I might wait to wear Toxic Seaweed on that day :) your nails are getting long again! Very nice!

P.S. there is an eyelash on your Tulum! Hehehe
