  1. POLICE FILES: Benefit has landed

    December 31, 2011 by pam

This blog is dedicated to nail polish. And because I know people visit to read about polish, I try not to post about things that aren’t polish-related. But sometimes it can’t be helped. Sometimes something non-polish is so awesome (and so special to me) that it has to be written about.

This is one of those times.

I know a lot about nail polish. Too much, even. But when it comes to makeup, I know as much as a newborn baby.

Sure, there was a time I had a huge traincase of cosmetics, and sure, I loved playing with them, but I’m really not good at applying makeup. Tatin says I can learn just like I learned to paint my nails and I am making it my mission to do so one day.

I’ve survived these makeup-challenged years with two weapons – black eyeliner and Benetint.

If there’s a party, if we’re going out, if I need to look a little more dressed up, I just pick up my eyeliner and Benetint.

I love Benetint, Benefit’s lip and cheek stain. And Tatin finds it funny that I do. She wrote in her blog: “How funny that one of her favorite non-polish beauty products would come packaged in a bottle and brush that still looks like nail polish.”

It’s one of the few beauty products that I use up completely. Maybe the only one. In fact, my last bottle was so used (and abused) that its head broke off. And I still kept using it until it was completely empty.

The problem was I couldn’t buy Benetint here easily. Sure, there were resellers but their prices were high. So I had to get mine abroad.

When I heard that there were plans of bringing Benefit to Manila, I was excited. And finally, this month, it became a reality.

Tatin and I went to the soft opening of Benefit’s store in Greenbelt 5. It was madness. There were so many people there but Tatin and I squeezed into the store to get our Benefit fix.

I walked away with two tints – my beloved Benetint and Posietint.

    benefit1

I love love love the pretty packaging.

    benefit2

Let’s look at Benetint, my longtime love.

    benefit4

I love that it’s so easy to use.

    benefit9

This rose-tinted stain smells (and tastes) faintly like roses.

    benefit7

And I love that it makes you look like you just have naturally rosy cheeks.

    benefit8

I looked for old pics of me wearing Benetint.

This is me wearing nothing on my face but Benetint and eyeliner.

    24062_374831497057_531887057_3791784_129585_n

Another pic from the same night:

    24062_374830657057_531887057_3791729_1084055_n

Different day, different party, same Benetint.

    mansion6

    And okay, margaritas.

    mansion8

I’ve been loyal to Benetint for years. I didn’t think I’d fall in love with a different lip and cheek stain again.

    But enter Posietint.

    benefit10

Posietint is Benefit’s poppy pink lip and cheek stain.

    benefit11

Unlike Benetint which is a liquid, Posietint’s formula is creamy.

    benefit12

I tried it and was surprised by how much I love it. Especially on the lips.

    benefit13

I loved it so much I sent this e-mail to Tatin who was in Hong Kong:

“OMG! I love Posietint! Ang ganda nya sa lips!!!”

So now my killer combo is Benetint on the cheeks and Posietint on the lips.

Because of these two tints, I spent hours looking at every single product (and all the FAQs and reviews) on Benefit’s website.

    benefit14

And now I have a sizable Benefit wish list. And on top of that list is ChaChaTint, Benefit’s mango-tinted lip and cheek stain. Because I want to complete my Benefit tint trio and because Tatin says it will rock my world too.

I love you, Benefit. I’m so glad you’re finally here.

Each tint costs ₱1800. Follow Benefit Cosmetics Philippines on Facebook. You can find Benefit’s first store in the Philippines at Greenbelt 5.

  2. MUG SHOT: Deborah Lippmann’s Edge of Glory Polish Set for Lady Gaga’s Barneys Workshop

    December 15, 2011 by pam

It was 4 a.m. and after a full day of cooking and partying I felt ready to collapse. But then I spotted something that jolted me awake.

    petahgaga1

Remember how Petah surprised me with Deborah Lippmann’s Edge of Glory polish set from Lady Gaga’s Barneys Workshop?

    petahgaga3

Thanks to Joel and Ver, it finally landed here in Manila. And it arrived with these awesome giraffe cards that Petah cuts by hand every year.

    petahgaga5

    petahgaga6

Yes, he’s crazy. And I mean that in the best way possible.

I opened the bag and found this beauty.

    petahgaga7

I opened the box and found that Petah had filled it with the goodies I recently bought online.

    petahgaga8

I couldn’t wait to see everything.

    petahgaga9

    Well hello there.

    petahgaga10

    Hello, Dior NY57th!

    petahgaga14

    You’re so pretty!

    petahgaga11

    Hello to you too.

    petahgaga15

    Silver Lake.

    petahgaga16

You’re sexy. I can’t wait to compare you to my beloved Chanel Graphite.

    petahgaga17

I was really excited to see this next one.

    petahgaga20

    Rebel Yell!

    petahgaga21

I’ve been dying to wear you.

    petahgaga22

    Chanel!

    petahgaga24

A precious new addition to my Chanel collection.

    petahgaga25

And of course, Deborah Lippmann’s Edge of Glory.

    petahgaga26

I inspected every inch of the box.

    petahgaga27

    petahgaga28

    petahgaga31

    petahgaga34

    petahgaga36

    petahgaga38

    petahgaga37

Thank you Petah! (And thank you Ver and Joel for bringing my babies home!)

    petahgaga64

    A big dose of happiness.

    petahgaga33

A couple of days later, I was finally able to bring the Edge of Glory set out so we could play.

    petahgaga39

Edge of Glory is a rich black jelly.

    petahgaga40

    It’s a gorgeous black.

    petahgaga47

    Super glossy.

    petahgaga42

    Super rich.

    petahgaga48

    I love it.

    petahgaga49

    The formula is fantastic.

    petahgaga54

    Super smooth and creamy.

    petahgaga52

    I used two coats.

    petahgaga53

I love this black so much.

    petahgaga50

I could totally wear it on its own.

    petahgaga51

But why would I do that when there’s the Edge of Glory Holographic Top Coat?

    petahgaga41

You have to forgive the insane amount of photos.

    petahgaga60

I just love this so much.

    petahgaga66

    It’s serious serious love.

    petahgaga73

Edge of Glory’s 3D Holographic Top Coat is a flakie top coat.

    petahgaga74

Yes, flakies aren’t new – we’ve seen a ton of them from brands like Nfu Oh.

    petahgaga77

But Edge of Glory just looks different to me.

    petahgaga82

Because while the usual flakies morph into two to three different colors – yellow/green/orange, blue/green, blue-green/green…

    petahgaga71

… this one changes into all kinds of colors.

    petahgaga67

Purple, blue, orange, yellow, green, red.

    petahgaga79

    Seriously, it’s crazy.

    petahgaga86

And the best part is you don’t have to be out in the sun to see the top coat’s effects.

    petahgaga72

    It’s also amazing indoors.

    petahgaga62

Here are photos of my Edge of Glory in natural light.

    petahgaga88

Check out all the crazy colors.

    petahgaga94

It’s been days and I still couldn’t stop staring at my nails.

    petahgaga103

    Because it’s just nuts.

    petahgaga101

    Nuts.

    petahgaga100

    Here’s a close-up.

    petahgaga99

    Am I in love?

    petahgaga96

    Yes I am.

    petahgaga102

Thank you, Petah, for this incredible gift.

You know how I know a polish is insanely beautiful? When it stops a mad swatching session because I don’t want to take it off.

And that’s exactly what Edge of Glory did.

Thank you, Petah. Thank you, Ver and Joel. Thank you, Lady Gaga. Thank you, Deborah Lippmann. Thank you, Barneys.

Now let me go back to staring at my nails.

Deborah Lippmann’s limited edition Edge of Glory set is still available on the Barneys website.

  3. MUG SHOT: Meet Coco my Secret Santa

    December 14, 2011 by pam

This year, my friends and I decided to play Secret Santa.

We set rules, set a budget, made wish lists, wrote our names on slips of paper and fished them out again to know who we’d be giving a gift to.

I swear, I tried to think of non-polish items to include in my wish list but it was hard. Very hard. Can I help it if it’s the only thing I want? So while my friends listed things like bed sheets and hampers and books and bags and goldfish (yes, fish!), I just listed polish. Polish they can easily buy in Rustan’s (one of our rules was no online shopping), polish I’ve been lemming for a long time.

    coco1

    coco2

I had only one non-polish item on my list – a subscription to Vogue.

I was excited to see which polish my Secret Santa would pick.

Then, the day before the reveal, Le surprised me with this crazy gift, crossing out four items from my wish list. I was overjoyed but then I started to worry. “What if my Secret Santa got the same colors?” I asked Jill.

“That’s okay,” she said. “That’s why Le included the gift receipts, so you can exchange them in case of duplicates.”

“Yeah I know but what if they feel bad about the duplicates?”

But it turns out I shouldn’t have worried.

The next day, after dinner, it was time for the reveal.

    P1120476

I really thought my Secret Santa was either Giff or Jason but it turned out to be Coco.

    P1120622

    Coco who makes killer mojitos.

Coco who likes wearing polish too. (He bought NARS Night Porter for himself – I was way impressed.)

Coco, the sweetest Secret Santa of all, who didn’t have gifts just for me but for everyone.

He handed me this gaily wrapped gift. And the gift had a Dior ribbon. (BTW, that’s NARS Dovima on my nails. Thank you, Le!)

    P1120590

    A clue!

    coco4

    I opened the package.

    coco3

    And found these inside.

    coco6

    Whew! No duplicates!

    coco7

Coco had gotten me bottles of Dior gorgeousness.

    coco8

Dior Black Ink and Psychedelic Orange.

    coco9

    Two shades I’ve wanted forever.

    coco10

I can’t wait to wear them.

Thank you, Coco, for my polish bottles, the sweet letter, the big dose of 30 Rock, the killer mojitos (I want one – no, five – now), for being an awesome Secret Santa and for being a great friend.

  4. POLICE FILES: Unwrapping the most Christmassy un-Christmas gift

    by pam

I’ve seen a number of polish fans moan about the lack of real-life friends who understand their obsession. I’ve read of friends who complain, who roll their eyes, who wave off polish love as weird and crazy.

I’m pretty lucky. I don’t just have real-life friends who understand my obsession, I have real-life friends who share it.

Friends like Le who love polish like I do (and makeup too!), who can talk with me about new colors and brands for hours, who know exactly how to rock a polish fanatic’s world.

And that’s exactly what Le did last Friday. She rocked my world.

Jill and I had just finished picking up a few more items at the supermarket for our cookfest. We went to Eastwood to have dinner and to wait for Giff who would be cooking with us. Le joined us – I thought so she could have dinner with us – but she handed us packages.

“Merry Christmas,” she said to Jill.

Then she handed me this pretty gift bag and said, “This is not your Christmas present.”

    le1

And, since it wasn’t my Christmas present, she wanted me to open it right there.

But I said no, I’ll open it after the cookfest, as a reward for slaving over the stove.

Now is the time to confess that I wasn’t able to wait that long.

Just a few hours later, before the cookfest even began, I opened my present.

    le2

And when I say present, I mean presents. Presentsssss.

    le3

Look at how pretty this is.

    le4

    It’s too pretty to open.

    le5

    Almost.

    le6

I opened the box and gasped.

    le7

“Oh my god, she’s crazy!” I said to Jill.

    le8

    NARS Chinatown. Gorgeous.

    le9

    I opened the next box.

    le10

    Schiap!

    le11

Look at how crazy pretty that pink is!

    le12

Schiap has been on my wish list forever and ever and now she’s mine.

    le13

After just two boxes, I was feeling overwhelmed. But Le wasn’t done yet.

    le14

    I opened the third box.

    le15

    Dovima!

    le16

The bright red I’ve been lusting over.

    le17

And the fourth and final box.

    le18

    Inattendu.

    le19

    A pretty pretty peachy beige.

    le20

Now my Chanel Shade Parade is almost complete.

I lined up the boxes and gawked at how pretty they looked.

    le21

It was such an overwhelming surprise, a surprise that came in the middle of a crazy week, a surprise that seriously rocked my world.

    le22

Thank you so so so much, Le.

    le24

If this wasn’t a Christmas present, then why does it feel like Christmas?

  5. MUG SHOT: Chanel Harmonie De Printemps for Spring 2012 (April, May, June) vs. other Chanels

    December 12, 2011 by pam

    I’m back, finally.

As I was cooking for the crazy Christmas dinner we hosted last Saturday, I kept thinking, “Please please please don’t let my nails break. I need to swatch the Spring Chanels again.”

The dinner party was a success (we served crostini with cheese pimiento, crab cracker salad, rice dumplings, goat cheese and tomato jam on wanton strips, sukiyaki, green chicken, herb and potato crusted tenderloin, mashed potato, rice, rice krispie sundaes, homemade billy’s cake, red velvet cupcakes and insanely strong jello shots) and the nail polish gods listened – none of my nails broke, not even after cooking for over ten hours.

And finally, here are swatches and comparison pics of the three nail colors of Chanel’s Harmonie De Printemps for Spring 2012 – April, May, June.

One thing I failed to mention when I posted my quick swatches is how glossy these shades are.

    compspring1

The collection was inspired by the changing moods and colors of spring.

    compspring2

And Chanel’s Global Director for Makeup Peter Philips, who created the three Le Vernis shades as an homage to the mischievous spirit of the most changeable of seasons, named them after the months of spring.

    compspring4

But I call them love. Love times three.

    compspring3

I know April comes first but let’s start with June.

    compspring5

Chanel says, “Pastel apricot, like a foretaste of summer.”

    compspring6

Apricot is the perfect way to describe this shade. And yes, I can totally see myself wearing this in the summer too.

    compspring8

It’s such an unusual, happy, vibrant shade.

    compspring9

    It reminds me of popsicles.

    compspring16

Being a jelly-creme hybrid, June is sheer on the first coat but builds well and is opaque at three.

    compspring18

The formula is nice and creamy, none of the streakiness we’ve come to expect from pastels.

    compspring10

    Yes, June, I’m a fan.

    compspring20

Even without checking, I already knew I didn’t have anything close to June in my collection.

    compspring26

Everything was either too peach or too beige.

    compspring27

    See?

    compspring24

    Same thing on the nails.

    compspring30

    They all look different.

    compspring31

Miami Peach is peach and sparkly, Orange Fizz is a coral creme, Inattendu is a beige creme, Peche Nacree is a frosty pale peach.

    compspring29

And now, let’s look at May.

    compspring33

According to Chanel, May is “intense pink, the universal shade of happiness.”

    compspring34

I’ve said it before – I don’t think the shade is intense.

    compspring35

It’s a soft, sweet baby pink.

    compspring38

And while I disagree with the “intense” part, I totally agree about this being a happy color.

    compspring40

Just looking at this makes me happy.

    compspring41

May’s formula is similar to June’s.

    compspring45

It’s smooth, creamy and perfect after three coats.

    compspring39

I have a number of pink Chanels in my collection but nothing that looks like May.

    compspring50

Mistral, Morning Rose and Ming are all pale pinks, with Morning Rose and Mistral having sparkles. Rose Insolent is much too deep to be May’s twin.

    compspring49

    There’s the pretty sparkle.

    compspring51

    They’re all such pretty pinks.

    compspring53

    Here’s another look.

    compspring52

    And finally, April.

    compspring54

Chanel describes April as “the highly luminous garnet of wild berries.”

    compspring55

A gorgeous description for a gorgeous color.

    compspring56

I love all three shades from this collection but I have to say that April is my biggest love.

    compspring58

April provides a contrast to the pastels in this collection and, according to Chanel, “coats the nails with a touch of timeless femininity.”

    compspring61

I love how hard it is to figure out this shade.

    compspring62

Is it purple, is it red? Is it a reddish purple or a purplish red?

    compspring59

Chanel says it’s a “seduction of its ambiguous shade.”

    compspring65

I call it craziness. Craziness I love.

    compspring65

The formula is perfect – it’s super rich and glossy. I used two coats.

    compspring66

One way to know if a nail polish shade is really awesome is if it passes the Distraction Test. I didn’t remove April from my four fingers after my first Chanel Spring 2012 swatching session and in the middle of a conversation, a friend had to stop me and say, “I’m sorry but what is that shade?”

    compspring67

So yeah, April aced the Distraction Test.

Let’s compare April to a few other Chanels.

    compspring69

    Again, no dupes.

    compspring68

    Not even close.

    compspring72

    Same thing on the nails.

    compspring78

Rouge Fatal is red and dark, Gondola is a sparkly shimmer and Fantastic is fantastic but not an April dupe.

    compspring76

    Love.

Now if only Chanel would release a polish called October.

Chanel’s Harmonie De Printemps Collection for Spring 2012 will be available in Rustan’s by the first week of January.
