  1. MUG SHOT: Chanel Enthusiast

    November 16, 2011 by pam

I know what you’re thinking. Finally, some swatches!

There’s been a lot of buzz online about Chanel Enthusiast these past few weeks. The reason? This iconic red suddenly resurfaced on the Neiman Marcus website. Chanel fanatics rushed to order the shade and the color has disappeared from the site again.

    enthusiast3

Holler if you think I’m wrong but Google tells me that Chanel Enthusiast first came out as a limited edition release in 2009.

    enthusiast2

I got my bottle of Enthusiast earlier this year, with the Chanels my friend Miko helped me buy from a seller in Singapore.

    enthusiast1

It’s my favorite of the bunch and yes, it has instantly become one of my all-time favorite reds.

    enthusiast4

And I’m sure you can see why.

    enthusiast9

And I’m sure you can’t blame me.

    enthusiast8

Enthusiast is a bright red orange polish.

    enthusiast11

    This color just pops.

    enthusiast14

I love it not just for the color but the formula.

    enthusiast7

It’s so rich that you can get away with just one coat. But I used two.

    enthusiast6

Application was easy, the formula is flawless.

    enthusiast10

It’s super smooth and dries super glossy.

    enthusiast5

    I love it.

    enthusiast15

I wanted to play with Enthusiast a little so I brought out Beige D’Or, a sparkly oldie but goodie from 2006.

    enthusiast19

It’s not really a top coat but I wanted to try anyway.

    enthusiast21

This is Chanel Enthusiast with a coat of Beige D’Or.

    enthusiast22

I like how it makes Enthusiast look completely different.

    enthusiast25

Beige D’Or’s gold sheen brings out the orange in Enthusiast.

    enthusiast24

It’s pretty too but I like Enthusiast on its own much more.

  2. POLICE FILES: The Wedding Manicurists

    November 15, 2011 by pam

    Meet Ver and Joel.

    ver5

They’re my awesome friends and three weeks ago, they got married.

    ver3

Their wedding was the real reason we flew to the US.

After spending a few days in New York, Jill and I took the train to Pennsylvania to help them get ready for the big day.

I was amazed at how hands-on Joel was when it came to planning the wedding. I was impressed – you don’t normally expect grooms to care so much about the small details. There was no wedding coordinator so he and Ver really took care of everything.

We all had our roles – Le was the maid of honor/makeup artist/hair stylist/stylist, Jill was the wedding photographer, Petah designed their gift mailbox and I was doing one of the church readings.

I also had another role – I was responsible for the bride’s nails. Weeks before the wedding, Le and I started planning Ver’s bridal manicure. We pretty much knew what we would use but I packed a few extras too, just in case. I was really excited. I love coming up with colors for people to wear on their special day (remember Marge, my first bride?) and I was even more excited because I knew Ver would be willing to go for something a little more fun than the usual boring neutral.

Since Ver was wearing a gold dress, this was the plan:

    ver1

The night before the wedding, Jill started working on Ver’s nails. Yes, Jill. She can be a professional nail tech, I’m not kidding.

    ver12

She’s much better at painting other people’s nails than I am.

    ver13

The result? Edgy neutral nails with a smattering of gold glitter.

    ver15

The next day, a couple of hours before the wedding, I added the matte top coat.

It was awesome to see how pretty the mani looked with Ver’s gown.

    ver18

    Here’s a closer look.

    ver19

    And another.

    ver17

I love how understated it is – but how it has a kick when you look closely.

Soon we had to leave for church. Ver was changing into a spectacular gown for the reception and I wanted to change her mani to match it. “Would we have time?” she asked. “We’ll see,” I said, packing the second set of polishes.

    The ceremony was beautiful.

    ver23

It was so sweet and touching that I ended up crying.

    ver27

And Jill caught it on camera.

    ver28

When the ceremony was over, the bride and groom posed for more photos.

    ver21

And naturally, there were mani sightings.

    ver22

    I love this photo.

    ver24

    Now zoom in.

    ver25

    Zoom in a little more.

    ver26

After the ceremony, the drive to the reception venue and the portrait session, we had some time to hole up in the bridal suite. We attacked the hors d’oeuvres (they were excellent) and they drank the cocktails.

I knew I couldn’t let Ver leave that room without changing into mani # 2.

    ver2

It would be perfect with her second dress. And here’s the awesome part – we just found that dress the day before – and Joel had no idea Ver would be changing clothes for the reception. It was going to be a big surprise.

And since Jill was busy taking pictures, it was my turn to be the wedding manicurist.

    ver29

I wasn’t done with Ver’s left hand yet when Dina their waitress came up to say she needed to be down in 15 minutes for her big entrance.

    ver30

Crazy. Pressed for time, we started working faster.

    ver32

I love this photo so much.

    ver33

We couldn’t stop teasing Ver about how she looked like a princess.

    ver31

I was so happy we were able to use Today Was A Fairytale – the name is perfect for Ver and Joel’s special day.

    ver37

Look at how beautiful Ver is. I love love love love love this dress so much.

    ver38

And as she made her way down the stairs, her wedding entourage gasped. I swear, it was like that scene from She’s All That. Awesome.

Joel’s reaction was priceless. His jaw dropped. And then he said, “That’s my bride, y’all!” making everyone laugh.

    ver41

    Let’s go for another close-up.

    ver42

There were more gasps when Ver finally entered the ballroom.

    ver43

I love how the dress and mani fit their reception’s theme – Nightmare Before Christmas. (Ver loves Tim Burton and yes, it was only a couple of days before Halloween.)

    ver46

It was fun watching Ver and her mani in action.

    ver44

    Such a happy day.

    ver47

The bride and her nail girl.

    ver39

And I am proud to say that my dress cost all of $5.

And in case you’re wondering what polish I wore on their special day, here it is:

    ver11

To match their black and purple motif, I wore a-england Avalon with RBL Iconoclast + Deborah Lippmann Today Was A Fairytale on accent fingers.

    ver10

Congratulations, Ver and Joel. It was such a beautiful beautiful day and I am so glad I was a part of it. I love you both. I can’t wait to see you again. To quote Joel, gu-good time tayo!

    ver45

P.S. I’m sorry I stole four slivers of your wedding cake. I couldn’t help it, it was too good.

  3. MUG SHOT: What does a Care Bear wear on her nails?

    November 11, 2011 by pam

    I’m back.

The blog neglect can be explained in two words: New York. I was too busy squeezing the life out of the city to give my computer quality time.

Strangely, squeezing the life out of the city did not mean snapping up every polish bottle I saw. I didn’t buy a lot of polish on this trip. Seriously, it’s almost shocking (especially compared to the damage I did last year). But I’m not here to talk about shopping. Yet. We’ll save that for another post.

I’m here to talk about Halloween.

Last year, Halloween was a blast.

I don’t know if you remember but Jill, Petah and I dressed up as bees.

    76308_461627256576_601526576_5811227_7470172_n

We painted our nails with Chanel L.A. Sunrise.

    74433_461627451576_601526576_5811238_8313212_n

And because we didn’t have time, Petah Sharpied black stripes on them.

    76308_461627256576_601526576_5811227_7470172_n

Then we joined the Village Halloween Parade. It was crazy, it was wild, it was fun.

And this year, since we were joining the parade again, Jill and I spent a lot of time trying to decide on our costumes.

Popeye and Brutus! Ghostbusters! Mario and Luigi! I was really fighting for Mario and Luigi but I’m so glad Jill didn’t agree – there were way too many Marios and Luigis at the parade. Small ones, big ones, slutty ones.

Petah and his friends were going as the Care Bears. And when we saw Care Bears hats in Pennsylvania, Jill and I knew it was meant to be. We were meant to be Care Bears too.

    halloweenpolish2

Jill and I spent a couple of days going around different stores in Pennsylvania and New York looking for the rest of our Care Bears costumes. Jill ended up wearing a bright yellow fleece jacket from Marshall’s, yellow jeans from Delia’s and her new Doc Martens while I wore a white shirt, black leggings, a puffy pink jacket from Uniqlo, furry leg warmers from Forever 21 and my beloved Sanrio Doc Martens.

    halloweenpolish1

My favorite part of my costume?

    The leg warmers.

    halloweenpolish3

I was Cheer Bear, Petah was Misfortune Bear and Jill was Funshine Bear.

    halloweenpolish4

Petah made our belly badges and butt hearts and we pinned them on.

    halloweenpolish5

    That’s Susan as Harmony Bear.

Now here’s a question: if you were Cheer Bear, the happy, perky bear who wears a rainbow on her tummy, which polish would you wear?

The name of the perfect polish hit me instantly. And what tickled me is that I actually had the polish with me in New York.

And that’s crazy for many reasons:

    1. I have around a thousand polishes in my collection.
    2. I brought less than ten bottles with me.
    3. I don’t know why I decided to bring it.
    4. I didn’t know I was going to be a Care Bear for Halloween when I packed.

Again, I think it was meant to be.

You’re probably wondering which one it is.

    Here’s a clue:

    halloweenpolish12

Yes, that’s Deborah Lippmann’s Get This Party Started set which I bought months ago during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

    halloweenpolish13

Only one of these three shades jumped into my luggage.

    halloweenpolish14

    And yes, you guessed right.

    halloweenpolish15

    Candy Shop.

    halloweenpolish24

Multi-colored and multi-sized glitter in a pink jelly base.

    halloweenpolish22

The perfect polish for a pink Care Bear with a rainbow on her tummy.

    halloweenpolish11

I love how it matched my puffy jacket.

    halloweenpolish21

    Here’s a close-up:

    halloweenpolish23

My Candy Shop mani and I headed out to the parade with the other Care Bears.

    halloweenpolish6

Like the year before, the parade was fun, crazy and wild.

    The highlights of my night?

Seeing the South Park boys who acted very South Park-like. (“I hate crowds. Let’s get out of here!”)

    halloweenpolish9

    halloweenpolish10

    And meeting Ugly Betty.

    halloweenpolish7

Halloween rocked this year. Can’t wait for next year.
