  1. MUG SHOT: NARS Holiday 2011 – Space Odyssey and Endless Night (with Kismet and Jungle Red)

    September 12, 2011 by pam

In my previous post you saw the afternoon I spent with NARS international makeup artist Marco Castro in Rustan’s. Today, you’re going to see swatches of four NARS shades – Space Odyssey and Endless Night from the Holiday 2011 Collection, Kismet from the Summer 2011 collection and the iconic Jungle Red which is the brand’s top-selling nail polish of all time.

    Let’s start with Space Odyssey.

    narsholiday11

François Nars named this polish after the series of science fiction novels and films by Arthur C. Clarke.

    narsholiday8

They describe Space Odyssey as “a futuristic-looking metallic, aluminum-colored nail polish.”

    narsholiday12

    I call it crazy silver.

    narsholiday47

You know this – I usually don’t go crazy for silver polish.

    narsholiday48

I like seeing it on other people but I always think I couldn’t rock it.

    narsholiday53

But for some crazy reason, I am really loving Space Odyssey.

    narsholiday42

Maybe it’s the formula – I love how the micro-glitter is packed, how it’s opaque in two coats and how it dries to a smooth finish.

    narsholiday49

I think this would make the perfect holiday manicure.

    narsholiday52

It’s the perfect shade for tearing into Christmas presents.

    narsholiday46

Marco is right – the holidays are the perfect excuse to play with shimmer and color.

    narsholiday44

But I don’t think Space Odyssey should only be worn during the holidays.

    space1

In fact, I am wearing it now.

    space4

It’s too awesome to be kept hidden the rest of the year.

    space6

And there’s more than one way to wear Space Odyssey. You can wear it alone, sure, because it becomes opaque easily, but you can also wear it as a top coat.

Marco says he loves seeing it over Galion.

So naturally, I wanted to try it.

This is NARS Galion, from the Fall 2011 collection, which you’ve seen two million and five times on this blog.

    narsholiday56

I can’t help it, I love it so much.

    narsholiday57

This is Space Odyssey over Galion.

    narsholiday58

    Crazy, right?

    narsholiday59

I tried to make Space Odyssey as light as I could because originally I just wanted a smattering of the micro-glitter, like stars in the dark sky.

    narsholiday65

But because Space Odyssey is super packed with glitter, that was impossible.

    narsholiday63

The lightest coat left a ton of sparkle on Galion.

    narsholiday62

Which isn’t a bad thing at all.

    narsholiday61

    I think it freaking rocks.

    This is Endless Night.

    narsholiday14

In the bottle, it looks almost burgundy.

    narsholiday19

But it’s really an insanely deep purple.

    narsholiday18

You can see its purple base when you open the bottle.

    narsholiday68

    NARS describes this is “black-grape.”

    narsholiday73

That’s pretty accurate. And I love it.

    narsholiday69

I am a huge fan of vampy shades. I think colors like Endless Night are crazy sexy.

    narsholiday81

The formula was fantastic – the polish applied super smoothly and the finish was super glossy.

    narsholiday80

You’d need two or three coats, depending on your brush strokes and how thick the coats are.

    narsholiday82

And if Space Odyssey is the perfect manicure for opening gifts, I can totally see Endless Night wrapped around a wine glass at a New Year’s Eve party.

    narsholiday78

    Sexy.

    This is NARS Kismet.

    narsholiday21

This shade was released with Ecume for Summer 2011.

    narsholiday20

NARS describes Kismet as “metallic sunflower.”

    narsholiday89

I love the description – it makes me think of the powerful sunflower in Plants vs. Zombies.

    narsholiday90

I thought this color would be similar to Desperado.

    narsholiday98

But it is a brighter, happier color.

    narsholiday104

It’s a very yellow almost metallic shimmer.

    narsholiday95

    Once again, great formula.

    narsholiday101

    I used two coats.

    narsholiday100

    And finally, Jungle Red.

    narsholiday22

Jungle Red is NARS’ top-selling polish.

    narsholiday23

And when Marco told me the history of its name and how it was inspired by an old Joan Crawford film called “The Women,” I knew I couldn’t leave Rustan’s without buying it.

    narsholiday24

    It did not disappoint.

    narsholiday112

NARS describes Jungle Red as a “bright red.”

    narsholiday108

    It is a gorgeous red.

    narsholiday110

A classic red that will never go out of style.

    narsholiday116

    It’s sexy sexy sexy.

    narsholiday119

A lot of women have pledged allegiance to Jungle Red. And now that I’ve worn it, I’m not surprised.

    narsholiday127

Again, fantastic formula. Super smooth, super glossy, super sexy.

    narsholiday125

Marco said, “Red lipstick gives you power.”

    narsholiday121

I’d like to think that red nail polish is the same.

    narsholiday124

But here’s the funny thing. Check out the page I was reading as I was swatching this shade. (Yes, I read while I swatch. Yes, I’m weird)

    narsholiday114

A hilarious coincidence. And I feel sorry for the character in the book who can’t appreciate red nail polish.

    narsholiday123

Because seriously, she’s missing a lot.

    narsholiday117

Jungle Red, you rock my world.

    narsholiday115

    Sigh, NARS, I love you.

NARS Fall 2011 Collection is now available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source. The Holiday Collection will be out in November. Jungle Red, Kismet and shades from the permanent line and previous collections are also available. Each bottle is ₱995.

  2. POLICE FILES: An afternoon at Rustan’s – Marco Castro, Marky Mark and a lot of NARS

    by pam

The awesome Cheska Sy invited me to the NARS press event at the NARS boutique in Rustan’s Makati’s Grand Mall last week.

    narsholiday1

I said yes immediately because one, I love NARS; two, they were bringing in an international makeup artist and I wanted to meet him and three, I wanted to grab the chance to play with NARS’ Fall and Holiday 2011 Collections.

This is NARS’ Fall 2011 Collection, which is out in Rustan’s The Beauty Source now.

    nars1

This is NARS’ Holiday 2011 Collection which will be released in November.

    nars3

Seriously, who wouldn’t want to play with these beauties?

    nars2

    I certainly did.

    And so I went.

We spent the better part of an hour talking to international NARS makeup artist Marco Castro about the new collections, the brilliance of François Nars, makeup mistakes women make and Color Me Badd and Marky Mark (don’t ask).

    narsholiday3

The products from the two collections were laid out in front of us, ready for testing and swatching.

    narsholiday2

Marco gave us tips on using the different products. Like if you think Outremer, the vivid blue eyeshadow from the Fall Collection, is too bright, you can use it instead as an eyeliner.

Or that you can use Rue Bonaparte (the light almond Larger Than Life eyeliner) on your waterline to open up your eyes.

    narsholiday4

I had fun playing with the products. At the end of our session, my left hand looked like this:

    narsholiday34

I love love love the Larger Than Life eyeliners. I love eyeliner and I thought it was great that these didn’t smudge no matter how much I tried rubbing them off the back of my hand.

    nars4

    These were my favorites.

    narsholiday29

Via Veneto and St. Marks Place.

    narsholiday32

I’ve never used purple eyeliner before and I’m excited to try it. I love purple anything.

    narsholiday31

I also think it’s awesome that the eyeliners come with their own built-in sharpener. That rocks.

    narsholiday33

I have a feeling I’m heading back to Rustan’s when the Larger Than Life eyeliners are released – I want the blue one too, Rue Saint-Honoré.

I also want to purchase G-Spot, the new NARS Multiple that will be released with the Holiday Collection. I want to see if it will give me sexy flushed cheeks.

    narsholiday135

G-Spot will become part of NARS’ permanent line. Marco said, “I think G-Spot is good for everyone. It looks dark but it’s really not that dark. It goes on pretty sheer. It doesn’t matter if you’re Caucasian or Asian, it will look good. It will give you beautiful, sheer, rosy pink cheeks, like you just had a glass of wine.”

    Naturally, we also talked polish.

When I picked up the bottle of Space Odyssey and said, “You’re launching this at Fashion Night Out right?”

    narsholiday133

Marco looked at me and asked, “How do you know that?”

    I said, “I’m an addict.”

Marco likes how opaque Space Odyssey is and how it’s such a fun color for the holidays. He said that you can wear it alone but you can also wear it over Galion, which you’ve seen two million times on my blog.

    narsholiday134

It was like a light bulb went on in my head. Space Odyssey as a top coat? Why didn’t I think of that? Naturally, I wanted to try it.

Space Odyssey is just one of two polish shades to be released with the Holiday Collection.

The other one is Endless Night.

    narsholiday132

I love this deep deep purple shade too.

I asked Marco, “Which is your best-selling nail polish?”

“Jungle Red,” he said. “Do you know why it’s named Jungle Red?”

He told us about the Joan Crawford film “The Women,” where the nail polish shade called Jungle Red plays a role. “In the movie, the nail salon lady knows everybody and everything about their lives. If you go have your nails done and tell her, “I want Jungle Red,” she will tell you every single gossip she knows. It’s like a secret code. Jungle Red is definitely an iconic color and it’s our number one seller.”

François likes this color so much that the cash registers in his stores are usually hidden behind a glossy Jungle Red box.

I couldn’t leave without buying a bottle of Jungle Red after that. (And now I want to watch the movie too.)

    narsholiday24

I had the chance to do quick and dirty swatches of the holiday shades on top of my NARS Full Metal Jacket mani.

    narsholiday35

That’s Full Metal Jacket on my pinky and index finger, one coat of Endless Night over Full Metal Jacket on my middle finger and one coat of Space Odyssey over Full Metal Jacket on my thumb and ring finger.

Full swatches will follow very very soon.

NARS’ Fall Collection is now available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source. The Holiday Collection will be released in November.

  3. POLICE FILES: Petah the Polish Elf vs. Kim Kardashian (Or how I got my Les Jeans De Chanel)

    September 10, 2011 by pam

Last night, I went to bed wishing I was in New York so I can join the madness that is Fashion Night Out.

But then I woke up to an e-mail from Petah – an e-mail so awesome it will go down as one of the best e-mails ever sent in Polish Police history.

You remember Petah? Yes, Polish Police’s New York correspondent. Yes, Petah, my super sweet polish elf.

While I was zzzing, Petah was hard at work on the other side of the world, doing everything he could to get his hands on the bottles of Les Jeans De Chanel that I have been coveting.

    Vogue_FN_Romance

But I shouldn’t be telling you this.

Petah should be telling you his story.

    Here we go:

    Hi Pammy,

Nobody warned me about this phenomenon – Fashion Night Out was CWAZY!!! The day before FNO, I went to the Chanel store in SoHo (since I was in the neighborhood). They were busy putting up the banners for their new polish. There I was, looking like a delivery boy, sweaty but eager to get my hands on the products. I waited for 10 mins til someone attended to me. The sales guy (unlike in the house of Dior) was courteous enough to ask me to return the next day since they weren’t doing any pre-selling.

So Thursday arrived and after getting out of the train, chaos greeted me. It was like shopping in Divisoria in sequins and high heels! Everybody was toting goodie bags and on every street were queues of people trying to score goods from their favorite designer. And lo and behold, Spring Street was blocked by police cars and limousines and thousands of fans screaming for the friggin’ Kardashians! Your babies were blocked by them big asses.

Determined, I went around a couple of blocks and were greeted by Chanel bouncers! I wondered why polishes needed that much security… They almost didn’t let me in since I was not pretty enough but after convincing them that I have money to spend, they let me through. Chaos continued inside the boutique. I never would have imagined being surrounded by 10,000 Pams but everybody in the store was gagging for them cutex! Good thing the sales guy remembered me and I got out of there without breaking a sweat.

There were at least 100 people wrapped around Chanel’s block after I left. I felt proud and mighty thinking how happy Pammy would be; and Kim can kiss my behind!

    Enjoy your new babies.

    your polish elf,
    : – Petah

And Petah didn’t just send me this awesome e-mail, he also sent me photos of his Chanel adventure.

    lesjeans1

Thanks to him, it feels like I was there.

    lesjeans2

And thanks to Petah, I don’t have to go nuts trying to figure out where I’ll get this collection which I’m sure will disappear super fast.

    lesjeans3

    Oh god. Chanel love.

    lesjeans4

Even Jill is excited about these and that’s saying a lot because she’s never excited about polish.

    lesjeans5

Blue Rebel, Blue Boy, Coco Blue.

    lesjeans6

I cannot wait to swatch these babies.

    And I will, soon.

In the meantime, check out these beautiful swatches from The Beauty Look Book and Front Row Beauty.

Thank you so much Petah! You are the best polish elf in the world. I will give you a big big hug and a lot of love when I see you.

If you’ve been dying to get your hands on these shades too but don’t know where, here’s a quick guide:

Bottles are already up on Ebay as early as now but please don’t give in to exorbitant Evilbay prices. You don’t have to pay more than retail – especially not if the products are still readily available in stores.

USA: You can find this collection on the Chanel website and at Chanel boutiques in California (Beverly Hills, Robertson, South Coast Plaza), Florida (Bal Harbour, Orlando, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Worth Avenue), Hawaii (Ala Moana, Waikiki), Chicago, Boston, New York (57th Street, Madison Avenue, SoHo), Texas (Dallas, Houston) and Virginia and select Neiman Marcus stores.

SYDNEY: You can find Les Jeans De Chanel in Myer.

SINGAPORE: The collection will be launched at the Chanel boutique in Marina Bay Sands on September 19. It will also become available at the Chanel Makeup Studio at ION Orchard starting September 23.

HONG KONG: The collection is out in Hong Kong now.

  4. POLICE FILES: A very quick (NARS) Space Odyssey

    September 9, 2011 by pam

I have so many exciting things to show you that I don’t know where to start.

But I’ve been drowning in work and haven’t had the chance to sit down for some serious swatching. The serious swatching will start soon, I promise, and I know this because the weekend is almost upon us.

Although a part of me wishes I was in New York getting ready to go crazy at Vogue’s Fashion Night Out, I’m happy that I am holding a little piece of the action in my hands – the dazzling Space Odyssey NARS has created for us to enjoy.

    spaceodyssey

I am wearing Space Odyssey on just two of my nails now but I will be back soon with a lot of swatches.

In the meantime, I need to get some sleep because it’s 6 a.m. on my side of the world. Happy FNOing to the people lucky enough to be in the right city at the right time! Now I’m gonna go zzzzzzz and dream polish dreams.

  5. MUG SHOT: Dior Underground + Dior Rock Coat

    September 6, 2011 by pam

Last night, I fell asleep still holding my iPod Touch. That’s how I make myself sleepy – I read, I check out Instagram, I look at Tumblr posts about The Big Bang Theory and I stare at nail polish until I can’t stay awake anymore.

This morning, this is what I saw when I looked at my iPod Touch again.

    dior

Yes, I fell asleep while searching for Dior polish. (And no, I didn’t sleep at 11 p.m. It was more like 4 a.m.)

I’ve been obsessing so much about Dior polish lately. I love it, it’s one of my favorite brands and it just keeps getting better and better.

And I’ve been obsessing because there are three shades I’ve been wanting but haven’t been able to get my hands on.

Well, okay, I have a looong list of Dior shades I want but these are the top three.

    Saint Tropez.

    dior2

    Oh lordy.

    And Ebony and Camel.

    dior3

    Awesomeness.

    dior4

I am not giving up. My hunt for these shades will continue. And in the meantime, I’m glad I have other gorgeous Dior shades to keep me busy.

    Like Dior Underground.

    diorunderground1

This sexy brown is from the Rock Your Nails Collection, a collection that I have finally completed.

    diorunderground2

    I love Underground.

    diorunderground5

It’s no secret that I love deep brown shades.

    diorunderground7

And it’s no secret that I love grays.

    diorunderground8

So it’s no surprise that I love Underground.

    diorunderground11

It’s a deep brown with a tinge of gray.

    diorunderground9

    The formula was fantastic.

    diorunderground10

Application was fast, easy and flawless.

    diorunderground12

Two coats and it was perfectly opaque.

    diorunderground13

This is Underground with Dior Rock Coat.

    diorunderground14

Dior Rock Coat was also part of Dior’s Rock Your Nails Collection for Summer 2011.

    diorunderground18

This top coat can turn polish a couple of shades darker.

    diorunderground16

    But you already know that.

    diorunderground22

I love how Dior Underground looks on its own.

    diorunderground19

But I also love how it looks with Rock Coat on top.

    diorunderground23

I like the gloss and how dark it becomes.

    diorunderground21

And I love how I can wear Underground today and add a layer of Rock Coat tomorrow for a new look.

    diorunderground24

Here’s a closer look at Underground with and without Rock Coat.

    diorunderground15

Which look do you like more?

    diorunderground17

    I can’t decide.

You can find Underground, Rock Coat and other Dior shades at Rustan’s The Beauty Source. Each bottle costs ₱1200.
