  1. MUG SHOT: Three Harry Potter manis

    July 22, 2011 by pam

I prepared heartily for the release of the last Harry Potter film. My newspaper section came out with two Harry Potter specials. I reread all seven books. I watched the first seven movies.

And I planned on doing a special manicure when I watched the last one. And because one special manicure wasn’t enough, I ended up doing three.

The first time I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was really early. So early that I wasn’t allowed to talk about it yet. There were only seven of us at that private screening.

I sat there, riveted, crying and sniffling all throughout the movie. It didn’t help that I just finished reading the last book twenty minutes before the screening. I was an emotional wreck.

This is what I wore when I saw the last Harry Potter movie for the first time.

    harry1

That’s a-england Perceval with a matte top coat.

    harry2

I chose red in honor of Gryffindor and Perceval in honor of Albus Percival Dumbledore, one of my favorite characters.

    harry3

The second time I watched Deathly Hallows 2 was in Shangri-La, the day after the movie opened in theaters. I was really looking forward to watching with a big crowd because I wanted to see how they would react. Nel and the other girls in the office were talking about how lively the crowd in Glorietta was – they were cheering, clapping, crying – and I was hoping it would be the same at Shang. But I was wrong – they were quiet the whole time, only laughing when Mrs. Weasley called Bellatrix a bitch.

This was my second Harry Potter mani.

    harry5

Because I cannot draw to save an ant’s life, I asked Jill to draw for me.

    harry4

The base was OPI Skull and Glossbones and she used a black Etude House nail art pen to draw HP, Harry’s lightning-shaped scar and Hedwig on my nails. I used Chanel Graphite and Rescue Beauty Lounge Under the Stars to create accent nails.

My third Harry Potter mani is my favorite.

    harry22

I’ve been wanting to do newspaper nails forever (I work for a newspaper – how can I not?).

    harry21

I thought it was the perfect time.

    harry20

And what makes this mani even more special is the fact that I used pages from one of the Harry Potter specials we came out with.

    harry9

I chose words from one of my favorite articles – “How Harry Potter Changed The World” by my friend Ruey.

    harry14

My base color is Jane from Rescue Beauty Lounge. It’s an anagram of Hermione’s second name “Jean.” (Yes, I’m a geek.)

If you look closely, you’ll see the mirror image of the word “Harry” on my middle finger, “J.K.” on my little finger, part of the word “lightning” on my index finger and part of “Quidditch” on my thumb. It was my ring finger that I struggled with – I had to redo it five times, wasting the words Hermione, Rupert, Potter along the way. The print on the ring finger is still far from perfect but I knew I had to use it not just because I finally got the word “Potter” (although the “o” was missing) but because I managed to capture the word “over” under it.

    harry6

And it’s sad – because it’s over – at least until Pottermore.

    harry11

I posted a pic of this mani on Facebook and Twitter and I’ve been asked how to do it. There are great tutorials online – both in the form of videos and blog posts – but I thought I’d post a quick step-by-step here too.

    1. Paint your nails with your base color – choose a light shade. Gray would be nice.
    2. Wait for your nails to dry.
    3. Soak a nail in a bowl of rubbing alcohol (or vodka, if alcohol isn’t easily available in your country) for about five seconds.
    4. Press a piece of newspaper onto your nail for about thirty seconds. You might want to add more alcohol to make sure it’s completely wet. Hold the newspaper piece steady to make sure your imprint is clear. Don’t move it around.
    5. Remove the piece of paper and check if you are satisfied with the transfer.
    6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until all your nails are done.
    7. Add a layer of top coat to protect the letters from rubbing off.

    harry10

It’s really easy. If I can do it, you totally can do it.

What did you wear when you watched Deathly Hallows 2?

  2. POLICE FILES: Lunch with Kitty, The Great Walk of Polish and a massive massive swap

    July 21, 2011 by pam

When I first started this blog, I thought I’d just be chronicling my nail polish addiction and that was that. But this blog has led me to meet some great people who I can now proudly call my friends.

    Kitty is one of them.

Kitty, a US-based nail polish blogger and bag collector, was actually born and raised in the Philippines. She’s super super thoughtful and sweet. We’ve been exchanging e-mails for months now. Lucky for me, she came home for a surprise visit to her parents. I grabbed the chance to have a nail polish date with her.

We spent the weeks before her trip hunting for bottles for each other.

Our big plan? Have lunch, shop for polish and swap. Our swap turned into a massive one – but I’m getting ahead of myself.

I met Kitty on a humid Monday. We started our day with lunch at Via Mare in Greenbelt 3. While eating we talked about polish (of course), blogging and our lives and I enjoyed talking to her so much that I hardly tasted the food. We talked about frankens, Helmers and Melmers, Ulta and Sally’s, MUA and more.

Then we began our Great Walk of Polish. If you are going polish shopping, I highly recommend the path we took. It’s great not just for polish fanatics from abroad who want to stock up on Asian brands but for local polish addicts who want to see what’s readily available in the malls.

We started at Watsons in Greenbelt 5, which carried a mix of local brands like Bobbie, Caress, Caronia and U.S. brands like Revlon, Orly, Wet N Wild and Sally Hansen. Then we dropped by First Aid in Greenbelt 3 where we found mostly US brands – Revlon, Orly, Wet N Wild, Sally Hansen. Our next stop was The Face Shop’s new store in Greenbelt 3. I think they’re still in the process of setting up – the place still looked unfinished and they had fans instead of air conditioners.

We then walked to Landmark which, I swear to God, is a treasure trove for polish fans. Not only did they have a really extensive selection of local brands (and, according to Kitty, their prices were cheaper than in other department stores), they have the most complete selection of Orly I’ve seen in any store here. Landmark also carries Sally Hansen, Cover Girl, Revlon and other U.S. brands along with some brands from Hong Kong and Taiwan (yes, they had Elena’s crackle shades). There were also nail art supplies – from stampers and fauxnad wheels (which were crazy cheap – just P149.75 for a set!) to glitter, nail stickers and sliced fimo pieces (which I bought).

Kitty stocked up on a lot of pretty glittery shades while I obsessed over the fimo pieces.

From Landmark we went to Glorietta and we headed straight to The Face Shop. The store was bigger than the one in Greenbelt and they had a lot more polish too which was awesome.

From The Face Shop we went to Skin Food where Kitty bought more bottles. After Skin Food, she was all shopped out but I insisted that we walk to SM Makati just so she could see what they had at the Etude House and Tony Moly counters there. Sadly, the Tony Moly store in SM Makati only had a few bottles (and no glitter!) so we left SM empty-handed. We decided to skip Rustan’s since most of the brands sold there are easily available in the US.

Kitty and I said our goodbyes in Greenbelt. I couldn’t believe her trip went by so fast (she’s leaving in two days!). I’m sad that she’s leaving but I was happy that I got the chance to spend time with her. Our afternoon of polish was so much fun and I can’t wait for the next one. And I know there will be one.

And in the meantime, we have a lot to remember each other by. Because Kitty and I swapped packages over lunch. It was a massive massive swap. She gave me A TON of polish. A TON. I’m not even kidding.

    kitty1

    See?

She gave me a lot of China Glaze. And they’re all so pretty.

It was awesome to be able to spend hours with someone who didn’t just understand my obsession but is as mad about polish as I am.

Thank you, Kitty, for the awesome day, the crazy goodies, the fun time. I can’t wait to do it again.

  3. MUG SHOT: I now own Earth… my Tony Moly Galaxy is complete

    July 20, 2011 by pam

Greetings, Earthlings. I now own your planet.

    And your planet is pretty.

    earth1

You remember how I swatched the four colors from Tony Moly’s Galaxy Collection and realized that I was missing Earth?

Thanks to Foz, we found Earth in Tony Moly’s store in SM North Edsa.

    earth6

This is Earth, otherwise known as GT02.

    earth7

I do not have enough words to describe this polish.

    It’s crazy.

    Let’s begin with close-ups.

This is Earth in the bottle.

    earth3

This is Earth on my nail.

    earth2

This is Earth with top coat.

    earth22

Like the other colors from this collection, Earth does not dry glossy.

    earth4

Earth is a mix of fine silver and blue glitter and larger red iridescent sparkle in a silvery gray base.

    earth8

The red iridescent glitter turns pink and purple and orange and blue.

    earth12

Like the other planet shades, this color required three coats for full opacity.

    earth9

And although it didn’t dry glossy, it was still sparkly.

    earth10

    The finish is almost foil-like.

    earth13

    Foil-like with gritty glittery craziness.

    earth14

Add a top coat and the glitter gets crazier.

    earth18

And the craziest thing was every time I looked at Earth on my nails, it looked like a different color.

    earth17

    Dark gray, almost black.

    earth19

    Silvery gray.

    earth20

    Silvery blue.

    earth21

    Silvery gray blue.

    earth23

It even started to look blue-green to me.

    earth25

A silvery blue-green that my camera just couldn’t capture.

    earth24

I was worried I was seeing things so I did what any polish fanatic would do, I did a muggle test. I showed my nails to a 13-year-old boy and asked, “What color is this?” He stared at my nails and said, “Hmm… blue green?”

    I smiled.

“Wait,” he said. “Can I see them again?”

And he looked at my nails again.

    “Yeah, blue-green.. blue-green na weird.”

    earth26

I think we can chalk up the “weird” to the silvery sparkle. But it was good to know I wasn’t seeing things.

In the bottle, the polish doesn’t look blue-green at all, not under any kind of light. So it’s amazing to me that it can appear blue-green on the nails – it’s awesome.

    earth27

Under some lights, Earth looks like the tail of a magical mermaid – blue-green with silvery sparkle.

Under some lights, Earth looks like asphalt on a rainy evening – wet, gritty, glistening and glittering.

Under some lights, Earth looks like the night sky – gray, almost black, with a smattering of stars.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this polish is almost as complex as the planet we live in.

    And I love it.

Get your own Galaxy from Tony Moly. Each planet costs only ₱328, around $7.50.

Tony Moly has stores in SM Fairview, SM Megamall and SM North Edsa and counters in SM Department Stores in North Edsa, Makati and Davao. It will also be available in SM Megamall and SM Southmall’s Department Stores and SM Manila soon. Visit Tony Moly Philippines’ website and like the brand on Facebook.

  4. MUG SHOT: RBL Grunge and Pepto Pink and Rescue Beauty love

    July 19, 2011 by pam

Don’t think of it as a swap, think of it as adoption.

This story begins with my visit to my beloved Rescue Beauty Lounge in New York last year where I got a bottle of Catherine for the awesome Miss Bun.

But she thought I got her a bottle of Catherine H. so she ended up ordering Catherine for herself. So I sent Miss Bun my bottle of Catherine H. instead – and luckily I was able to order one last bottle of Catherine H. from Ji for myself.

That left me with an extra bottle of Catherine, which had long run out on RBL’s website.

A couple of weeks later, Ji kicked off RBL’s second Bring It Back Vote. There were nail polish fans rallying for Catherine but Catherine lost to Locavore, Anne, Scrangie and 360.

I knew immediately that I wanted to spread the love. I already had one bottle of Catherine – I was willing to give up the other to make another RBL fan happy. I had three conditions – one, I wanted to swap and not sell; two, I was only willing to swap it for another RBL color and three, I wanted it to go to someone who would love it as much as I would.

I posted about my extra bottle of Catherine on RBL’s short-lived discussion page on Facebook and on my swap list in MUA and I started getting a lot of messages including one from someone who turned out to be an evil evil Evilbayer.

One of the first people to send me a message was Jessie, a sweet polish lover from the US. We soon agreed on a swap – Catherine and Recycle (I had access to another bottle) for Grunge and Pepto Pink.

I sent the bottles to her from Manila and I asked her to send my bottles to James in California. Here’s the funny thing – I left for the US right around the time James came home so we ended up missing each other. And that meant my bottles of Grunge and Pepto Pink had to wait a few more weeks before I could officially adopt them.

I was happy that I made Jessie happy and that Catherine found a new home and I was happy to welcome Grunge and Pepto Pink into my life.

    grunge2

    I love them both.

    grunge4

    Hello, babies.

    grunge5

    It’s no secret – I love RBL.

    grunge1

This is Grunge. This shade has gotten so much love from so many people.

    grunge6

I love this description of Grunge on RBL’s website: “There’s an uber-cool woman. She’s rocking a Sally Hershberger shag, wears nerdy-edgy glasses in a color you can’t describe and has the greatest handbag ever—that her friend the designer created for her. At least you can have her nails—a moody pinkish grey with a dash of lilac. Unexpected but way cool. ”

    grunge9

Grunge is the epitome of edgy neutral.

    grunge10

Safe enough to wear at work.

    grunge14

Cool enough to rock on weekends.

    grunge15

    Classy but not boring.

    grunge18

    Simple but not blah.

    grunge19

And what made it even more perfect was RBL’s killer formula. Two coats, easy-peasy.

    grunge20

Here’s how Grunge looks in comparison to another edgy neutral favorite – Chanel Particuliere.

    grunge21

    Yes, Particuliere is way darker.

    Here’s Pepto Pink.

    grunge22

If you told me I was going to love Pepto Pink even more than I love Grunge, I would have told you to go sit on a duck. Or something.

    grunge23

Me? Choose pink polish over anything? No way.

    grunge24

    But that’s what happened.

    grunge25

I can’t help it, Pepto Pink is too pretty.

    grunge26

And RBL’s description of Pepto Pink was perfect for me: “If your closet is an undulating sea of dove, biscuit, stone, ebony, charcoal, and black, you need this color as stylish punctuation mark. ”

    grunge27

Because it’s true. I have way too much gray and black in my wardrobe. So much gray and black that when I was asked to bring clothes for a magazine photo shoot, I gave the editors a hard time because the issue was coming out in time for spring and I didn’t have spring-worthy options. Only black, black, gray and black.

    grunge28

I shopped a lot in an attempt to add pops of color to my wardrobe but I failed. I always end up with black and gray pieces. It’s as if I’ve made it my life’s mission to be walking charcoal.

    grunge30

So for now, I will rely on Pepto Pink to give me that pop.

    grunge31

Once again, fantastic formula. Two perfect and easy coats.

    grunge33

And if you need a little pink in your life too, grab Pepto Pink now – stocks are running low, according to Ji.

    grunge34

    Rescue Beauty love.

Grunge and Pepto Pink are available for $18 each. Visit Rescue Beauty’s website, find the brand on Facebook or follow Ji on Twitter.

  5. MUG SHOT: Tony Moly’s glittery Galaxy

    July 17, 2011 by pam

I have something crazy to show you today.

Remember how Tony Moly sent me those Snake Nail Polish bottles and dry nail appliqués to let me know that the Korean brand was finally in the Philippines? The great news is the brand has started opening more shops here.

Last week, Tatin and I went to Tony Moly’s Megamall store opening. While she went nuts over the limited edition Fruit Princesses Lip Gloss, I checked out the nail polish display.

There were different creamy shades but my jaw dropped at the glittery goodness. You know that I’m not the type to go crazy over glitter (unless it was Deborah Lippmann’s or Ji Baek’s) but I couldn’t help it – they were too pretty. I wanted to see what they’d look like on but my Lippmann Bad Romance mani was still fresh. Luckily, Tatin, who is a seriously awesome shopping partner, offered her nails as canvas.

And when I saw them on her nails, I knew I needed those glittery shades in my life. I had to bring them home.

My photos do not do these bottles justice. I swear.

    galaxy1

Since Tony Moly uses codes for their polish shades like most Korean brands do, I had no idea that these bottles were actually part of the Galaxy collection.

    galaxy2

And that the shades were inspired by different planets.

    galaxy3

And that there were five – and not four – shades in the collection.

    galaxy4

And that I was missing Earth. How can I not have Earth? That’s where I live. So I’m making it my mission to find it, my little piece of the galaxy trapped in a bottle.

In the meantime, let me blind you with the rest of Tony Moly’s glittery Galaxy.

These shades all dry matte. They look pretty matte but they also look awesome with a top coat.

    This is GT01.

    mercury0

    GT01 is Mercury.

    mercury4

Mercury is a mix of square and round red, blue, silver and gold glitter in a black jelly base.

    mercury1

    Here’s a close-up of the crazy glitter.

    mercury2

    Here’s how it looks matte.

    mercury6

See the texture and the glittery grittiness?

    mercury7

And here’s how it looks with a top coat.

    mercury5

I love how the top coat brings out all its crazy colors.

    mercury10

    Crazy crazy.

    mercury15

    The formula was nice.

    mercury17

But because the jelly base was sheer, I needed three coats for opacity.

    mercury18

But it wasn’t a problem because the coats dried fast.

    mercury8

    This is GT03.

    mars1

    Mars.

    mars2

Mars is a mix of round, square and hexagon gold, brown, orange and blue glitter in a deep amber base.

    mars13

    Here’s a close-up.

    mars4

Here’s Mars without a top coat.

    mars5

    It looks crazy matte.

    mars22

I don’t know why but it reminds me of Almond Roca.

    mars3

Out of the four colors, I think Mars is the one that’s most packed with glitter.

    mars10

I put a layer of top coat.

    mars11

    But the glitter absorbed it.

    mars14

I think you’ll need at least two layers of top coat if you want to make this one glossy.

    mars15

I used three coats of Mars for opacity.

    mars17

I thought a polish named after Mars would be a little more red but heck, I’m not complaining.

    mars20

    This is GT04.

    neptune1

    Neptune.

    neptune2

Neptune is a mix of round and square green, gold and silver glitter in a green jelly base.

    neptune7

The close-up will show you that there are some bigger green hexagon glitter in the mix too.

    neptune18

This is Neptune without a top coat.

    neptune5

And Neptune with a top coat.

    neptune8

You know Neptune is special because Tatin is not a green polish fan but she was raving about it.

    neptune13

And I can’t blame her. Because it is crazy pretty.

    neptune14

    I used three coats.

    neptune15

I know everyone loves China Glaze’s Emerald Sparkle but Neptune might just kick its ass.

    neptune16

    And finally, GT05.

    jupiter2

    Jupiter.

    jupiter1

Jupiter is a mix of purple, orange and blue iridescent glitter in a purple jelly base.

    jupiter7

    Check out the close-up.

    jupiter4

This is Jupiter without a top coat.

    jupiter5

    Yup, it’s pretty matte.

    jupiter19

And Jupiter with a top coat.

    jupiter6

    It’s beautiful.

    jupiter18

I love the hexagon iridescent glitter – it gives an extra sparkle.

    jupiter13

Jupiter is my favorite of the four shades.

    jupiter14

    Gorgeous.

    jupiter22

And it doesn’t matter if it’s matte or glossy.

    jupiter24

    It’s just beautiful.

    jupiter27

Which should explain the abundance of photos.

    jupiter23

    I can’t help it, I’m sorry.

    jupiter29

I used three coats for this too.

    jupiter10

Love love love. I love Jupiter.

    jupiter21

But let’s see what happens when I get my hands on Earth.

I love the shades from Tony Moly’s Galaxy Collection so much that I actually ended up dreaming about the collection. In my dream, they extended the collection and added two more shades. I swear, I thought it was real. When I woke up, I Googled like a madwoman and realized with sadness that it was all in my head.

The shades from Tony Moly’s Galaxy collection cost ₱328 each, around $7.50.
