  1. CONFESSION: The tragic tale of my Chanel Khaki Brun box :(

    February 27, 2011 by pam

Remember that wonderful day when I did my camo mani?

    c2

Something awful happened that day, something I wasn’t ready to blog about… until today.

You see, I did that camo mani while I was at Jill’s shop.

I brought everything I needed with me – my polish remover, my Orly Bonder, my Seche Vite, my Orly Spritz Dry, my beautiful bottles of Khaki Brun, Khaki Rose and Khaki Vert.

    But I made two mistakes.

One, I packed my polish remover and polishes together.

Two, I brought the polish boxes. I really should have just brought the bottles.

Because a horrible thing happened. On the way to Jill’s shop, my remover spilled in my bag.

I thought things were fine, that my bag just got a little wet but I was wrong.

Because when I saw my Khaki Brun box, it looked like this.

    1

    Are you ready?

    3

My heart sank when I saw it. I thought I could save it but my attempt just made it worse.

    2

I swear, I thought I was going to cry. My heart still hurts when I look at this picture.

I can’t believe the box used to look like this.

Most people will think I’m overreacting. My friends do. They find the whole “crying over a box” thing funny.

But I really treasure my polishes. And I always try to keep them in the pretty boxes they came in. My Chanels, my RBLs, my MACs, my Diors, my Lippmanns – if they came in a box when I bought them or when they were given to me, they are still in their boxes now.

    But not Khaki Brun.

Because the remover melted the box and after it dried, it sealed shut. I can’t even open it now.

And I feel bad because Khaki Brun’s sisters – Khaki Vert and Khaki Rose – are safe in their boxes. And now Khaki Brun is naked.

    4

Goomba from Super Mario Bros. tried to help.

    5

So did the adorable fur balls the awesome Miss Bun sent with my birthday surprise.

    6

And so did this tiny duck and this tiny sheep.

    8

They are awesome but they’re not the ideal box substitute.

    9

So for now, my beloved Khaki Brun will stay naked.

Think of this as a cautionary tale. Keep your precious polish boxes away from your polish remover.

  2. POLICE FILES: A day in the life of my Wonder Woman mani

    February 26, 2011 by pam

This post is for Peter who brought Wonder Woman into my life.

    1

He is in New York and too far away to see Wonder Woman on my nails so I’ve decided to show him a day in the life of my MAC Wonder Woman mani.

On my left hand I have MAC Spirit of Truth on all fingers except my ring finger which I painted with MAC Obey Me.

    2

On my right hand I have Spirit of Truth on all fingers except my index finger which I painted with Obey Me.

    3

I bought that old typewriter key ring when I went to the Brooklyn Flea Market in November with Peter and our friends.

The first thing I did when I woke up was pick up my computer and post about MAC Wonder Woman, check my e-mail, reply to blog comments, check Facebook, check Twitter.

    4

And then I got ready to go out. Most days I wear zero makeup but yesterday was an exception because I had a fundraising concert to go to.

Still, my makeup regimen is pretty simple. It doesn’t even take five minutes.

    5

Benefit Benetint for my lips and cheeks, Topshop Kohl because I love eyeliner, a little eyeshadow from The Body Shop and that’s it.

I used to have a whole train case of makeup but I’ve given most of it away. I hardly ever use them and felt like they were going to waste.

If you’re wondering what that cute little doll is, you’ll find out soon, I have a post about her too. For now, just call her Ms. Twinkle.

My friend Lele wanted to borrow some polish and said she was in the mood for salmon. I looked through my Helmer for salmon-ish shades and found these. I will admit that I envisioned sushi – it helped me find the colors faster.

    10

    Then I finished dressing up.

    11

I read my Kindle for a bit.

    6

And marveled at how easy it is to take nail shots when there’s sunlight.

    7

And wondered how I can manage to swatch in the morning.

    8

Yesterday was writing day, I made sure I didn’t schedule any interviews and meetings so I can just spend the whole day writing. I wrote. And Facebooked. And tweeted. And replied to e-mails and Facebook messages. It’s amazing how quickly they pile up. And I sent out questions for a couple of e-mail interviews. And juggled my phone and computer making arrangements for future features for the newspaper.

    9

At around 6 p.m., I was back in traffic and to help pass the time, I moisturized my cuticles.

    13

I love love love Lemony Flutter.

    12

Jill and I finished listening to an entire CD in traffic. We finally made it to the concert venue, met up with Giff and had a quick dinner before finding our seats at the fundraising concert. Tatin arrived soon after.

    14

Yes, that’s Ms. Twinkle with me at the concert. I’m obsessed with her.

The concert was okay – Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Bituin Escalante and Aiza Seguerra were among those who performed. They were great but overall, the concert could have been better. It was a fundraiser though and the place was packed so that’s a good thing.

At midnight, we met up three other friends for karaoke and beer.

    16

We haven’t done karaoke in ages. The last time I karaoked was Halloween 2010 with Peter in Paco’s apartment in the West Village before we joined the Village Halloween Parade.

    15

It was 5 a.m. by the time we got home this morning.

And nope, my day wasn’t over yet. I answered e-mails and Facebook messages, watched an episode of Glee, picked up my Kindle and read until my eyes begged for sleep.

And that was a day in the life of my Wonder Woman mani.

  3. MUG SHOT: MAC Wonder Woman Nail Lacquers – Spirit of Truth and Obey Me

    February 25, 2011 by pam

Yesterday, Wonder Woman landed in the middle of a really crazy day.

She came in a pretty Henri Bendel bag.

    1

My friend and polish angel Peter had sent the gift all the way from New York.

    2

And it came at just the perfect time.

    5

It was one of the high points of my insane day.

    3

I freaking love the red boxes.

    4

    They are so pretty.

    6

I love the white stars in the boxes.

    7

    Pretty pretty pretty.

    10

I couldn’t believe I finally had Spirit of Truth and Obey Me in front of me.

    8

I was surprised at how much darker Obey Me looked. The pictures I’ve seen of it have been much brighter.

    9

Spirit of Truth is darker than photos have shown too.

    11

They’re even darker than they appear in these photos.

    12

I’m so glad MAC released two cream polishes with the Wonder Woman Collection – cream is my favorite finish.

    13

    This is Spirit of Truth.

    14

It is a navy blue cream – and again, much darker than these pictures show.

    15

I love this color – it reminds me of the navy blue skirt I wore in my strict Catholic all-girls school for 11 years.

    16

    This was two coats.

    17

But you could get away with one coat – this polish is super richly pigmented.

I tried photographing it under a different light so you can see how dark it is.

    18

This is closer but it’s still darker than this.

    20

    I love Spirit of Truth.

    19

It reminds me of my favorite MAC Polish – Blue India. But they are not dupes – no way.

    This is Obey Me.

    21

Obey Me is a blue red cream.

    22

Again, it’s darker than these photos show.

    23

It is also richly pigmented – but not as rich as Spirit of Truth.

    24

    The first coat looks pink.

    25

So you need two coats for this one.

    26

I know people have complained about the quality of MAC nail polishes but they just seem to keep getting better and better.

    27

Both Spirit of Truth and Obey Me are extremely creamy and fluid. They are a joy to work with.

    28

Thank you, Peter. Thank you, MAC. Thank you, Wonder Woman. You rock my world.

Do I love the packaging? Yes. Do I love the colors? Yes. Do I love the formula? Yes. Am I tempted to get backup bottles? I have to admit I am. Will I go to the MAC retail events to snag another set of these polishes? I love them so much, I just might.

MAC Wonder Woman Collection will arrive in the Philippines in March. Retail events will be held on the following dates: March 19 (Glorietta), March 20 (Trinoma), March 25 (Marionnaud), March 26 (Shangri-La) and March 27 (Rockwell).

  4. POLICE FILES: Updates on Chanel Black Pearl and MAC Wonder Woman Collection

    February 24, 2011 by pam

Here are a couple of quick updates for polish fanatics in Manila.

Some of you have expressed disappointment about not finding Chanel Black Pearl in Rustan’s.

Why are Pearl Drop and Pêche Nacrée already out? Where is Black Pearl?

Black Pearl has been delayed but it will arrive in stores in early April.

    Chanel Black Pearl

Try charming your favorite Chanel counter girl so they can reserve a bottle for you.

MAC Wonder Woman has been delayed too – but not for long. The collection was supposed to arrive during the second week of March but this is the new schedule for the Wonder Woman retail events:

    March 19, Saturday – Glorietta
    March 20, Sunday – Trinoma
    March 25, Friday – Marionnaud
    March 26, Saturday – Shangri-La
    March 27, Sunday – Rockwell

On these dates, stores will open at 10 a.m. and there will be a makeup demo at 2 p.m.

Sadly, no amount of charm will make a reservation possible. (Believe me, I tried.)

    16

So if you want to get your hands on Obey Me, Spirit of Truth and the rest of this collection, mark these dates on your calendar, call your fellow Wonder Women and attack. Don’t forget your bullet proof bracelets and lasso of truth!

  5. MUG SHOT: Barielle Falling Star

    by pam

I’ve heard great things about Barielle but I never had the chance to try the brand.

Luckily, late last year, Nikkiz. had a few extras when she ordered from Barielle’s website and she let me purchase some.

I loved them all but I was most excited to play with Falling Star.

    1

And last night, after months and months, I finally got the chance.

    6

Barielle Falling Star is a periwinkle polish with copper glitter.

    3

This was part of Barielle’s All Lacquered Up collection, created by blogger Michelle Mismas and celebrity manicurist Elle Gerstein for Fall 2009.

    2

Two coats would have worked but I used three to make the color stronger. Application was smooth and super easy.

    10

I love that the glitter is subtle.

    7

That you can hardly see it unless you look closely.

    5

And when you do – bam! – there it is, a fantastic pop of color.

    9

I am wearing it Barielle Falling Star now.

    8

I hope it lasts until the weekend because I am loving it, I really am.
