  1. POLICE FILES: A very quick post

    October 22, 2010 by pam

I’m in the middle of a photo shoot, I’m wearing clothes with tags on them, I have a tulle bib, I’m fully made up and my normally inanely messy hair has been transformed into a glorious halo of curls, I’m waiting for the photographer to tell me he’s ready for me and there’s a giant pizza in front of me but first things first.

I needed to post this very quick post.

Because I need to show you something.

    Look.

    Look.

    jade

    I know!

    Can you believe it?

There’s a very long story behind this photo, a long story that involves the incredible incredible amazing Miss Bun.

I will be back very soon to tell you that story.

I promise to make time even though I only have two days left before my big trip and I still have an overwhelming list of things to do.

I still have to write a few zillion stories, e-mail a few thousands e-mails, buy two hundred things and pack.

    Madness. Madness, I tell you.

But none of that matters, because I have Chanel Jade in my hands.

  2. POLICE FILES: My first bride

    October 19, 2010 by pam

Polish Police has launched a new service – helping brides choose what color of nail polish to wear on their wedding day.

It wasn’t planned, it really wasn’t.

Jill doesn’t just spend her time doing my nails and surprising me with polish, she’s a photographer and she runs an awesome toy camera shop. Jill shoots a lot of weddings and Marge, who is the sister of our friend Chris the glovemaker, chose her to shoot their wedding.

They had also scheduled an engagement portraits session weeks before the wedding and I tagged along with a couple of film cameras so I could shoot too.

After the shoot, we all sat down for an incredible dinner in their home, a dinner cooked by Chris, a dinner I still can’t stop thinking about. (The thought of that little Spanish sausage wrapped in that puff pastry just kills me.)

While they downed wine and I drank my cocktail, the subject of nail polish came up. “What polish are you wearing on your wedding?” I asked Marge. When she said she wasn’t sure, I told her I’d help her, promising to send bottles she could choose from.

I pored over my polish inventory and realized that while I had enough colors to keep a drag queen/two hundred giggly tweens/Katy Perry happy, I didn’t have too many nudes and bride-friendly colors.

But I was determined to find a good shade for Marge.

Days before the wedding and right before we left for our insane pig-chasing adventure in Legazpi, I sent Marge four bottles of polish.

I was really hoping Marge would choose Sarah Smile.

    I had my fingers crossed.

Marge married Luke on October 12.

After the wedding, I kept bugging Jill to show me the pictures and tell me which shade Marge wore.

It looked like Sarah Smile to me but I wasn’t 100% sure.

But Marge confirmed it. She did pick Sarah Smile.

I was so happy. Sarah Smile looked wonderful on Marge.

Congratulations, Marge and Luke! It was great to be a part of your special day in this crazy small way.

  3. MUG SHOT: Chanel Black Satin + Lippmann Happy Birthday and why I’m the luckiest girl in the world

    October 18, 2010 by pam

An alternative title for this post could be MY FRIENDS ARE AWESOME.

    Because they really are.

I normally make a big deal out of my birthday but not this year. And I couldn’t, even if I wanted to. I was going to turn thirty on a Thursday – and on Thursdays I stay in the office until late to close the pages of my newspaper section. Yes, there is such a thing as birthday leave but I felt I had no right to take it for two reasons. One, I had just been away from work for two weeks when I was sick (and because of that my boss – who is awesome, by the way – had to go to work on her birthday) and two, I am leaving for a long vacation in the US eleven days after my birthday. Disappearing on my birthday just didn’t feel right.

My biggest plan for my birthday was to bring out the chunky glitter.

    bday2

Oh yes, it was time for the chunky goodness the wonderful Miss Bun had sent me a couple of months back.

    bday3

And I knew I wanted to wear it with black – and I thought, why not Chanel Black Satin?

    bday5

We all know my heart beats extra strongly for Chanel.

    bday4

Oh yes, it was the right choice.

    bday1

And so on the eve of my birthday, I took my usual spot in the bathroom and did my birthday manicure.

    bday6

And just like that, I fell in love with Deborah Lippmann.

    bday7

And now I want all her chunky glitter. All of it.

    bday8

I loved my birthday manicure so much that I posted a photo on Facebook and added this caption: “This birthday girl is drowning in deadlines and will be working all day. But that’s okay – because I have a party on my nails.”

    bday9

And soon, I found out that I wasn’t the only one who liked my manicure.

    bday10

On my birthday, I woke up and immediately continued transcribing an interview for an article I had to finish that day.

Then I went to the office.

And my friends were awesome because you know what they did? They went over to my office and ate chicken and cake and drank wine and hung out there even when I spent hours ignoring them because I was still rushing to finish another article. They turned my work night into a party.

It was a pretty awesome birthday – made even more awesome by new bottles of polish I got that day.

First there were these bottles from Tatin.

    bday11

Oh my god, I didn’t know Miami Peach had a sexy gold shimmer. I can’t wait to wear it!

    bday12

I also got these sweet babies.

    bday13

My birthday was the day I realized how sexy Dior polish can be.

    bday14

I honestly thought I was going to spend the next day, Friday, going to a couple of events before relaxing with my friends by watching a movie.

But no, that’s not what happened.

I skipped the Muji event and went straight to the Nokia one. Then I went to the office. Then I thought I was meeting up with Jill at her shop but no no no, I was wrong. She asked me to go to a hotel instead. And that’s when I knew something was up.

My friends had planned a surprise party for me.

Yes, they are the sweetest. And yes, they totally spoil me.

There was a lot of food (Jill’s carbonara tops my list of all-time favorites) and a lot of drinks and I was surprised because more and more people kept arriving. Even my grandma was there! So awesome.

I received a lot of presents that night including this sexy red Revlon from Melay and Dann.

    bday29

Before my birthday, people kept asking what I wanted and I kept saying nothing except maybe handwritten letters because I love getting letters. I really didn’t need gifts – having my wonderful friends in my life is enough.

The party ended at 5 in the morning on Saturday and at that point I was so tired that I ended up crashing on the hotel bed still wearing that day’s clothes.

Hours later, I had more carbonara for breakfast before checking out of the hotel. We headed straight to Shangri-La Mall because I wanted to go to Rustan’s to shop for polish.

I got this fantastic Dior polish that I just fell in love with – Melisse – along with two Nars bottles.

    bday15

It took me ages to decide which Nars bottles to get because M Butterfly and Schiap look great too but with the help of J, Momon, Tatin and their nails which they allowed me to paint on, I finally went for King Kong and Full Metal Jacket.

    bday16

For dinner, we went for Japanese. I decided to paint my nails with Melisse while waiting for the food. I love that color so much.

“When will you take off that polish?” Tatin asked.

    “I don’t know,” I said.

“If you take it off tonight, you have to buy us ice cream,” she said.

I laughed and continued eating my spicy kani salad and birthday noodles.

When I was done eating, Jill placed a box in front of me.

    bday17

I thought the surprises were over but I was wrong.

Jill had gotten me the Venomous Villains polishes. So freaking cool.

    bday18

Bad Fairy and Formidable survived the trip to Manila.

    bday19

But Mean & Green couldn’t handle the excitement. She exploded.

    bday20

    Crazy.

    bday21

But I was too touched by the surprise to be sad about Mean & Green.

And then, Tatin handed me a big paper bag and said, “This isn’t a birthday gift.”

And oh my god, my jaw dropped.

Because a lot of bottles I bought these past months had finally arrived from the US.

    MAC’s Alice + Olivia collection.

    bday22

So Rich So Pretty, Morning After, Military.

    bday23

MAC’s Fall 2010 Nail Trends collection.

    bday27

Earthly Harmony, Concubine, Jade Dragon, Ming Blue, Imperial Flower, Rain of Flowers.

    bday28

Ming Blue made Jill sad because she ordered me one too. Now I have two Ming Blues.

Then there was the Hello Kitty Vestral White I won in an Ebay bid.

    bday30

Now only the pink one’s missing from my Hello Kitty MAC collection.

    bday31

And my bottles of Santee Vikini Green arrived too. I first saw this color on Agent Lover Marie and I bid for it on Ebay. Miss Bun, one of these bottles is for you.

    bday32

A big pile of polish will not be complete without Chanel.

And here they are finally, my complete set of Les Khakis.

    bday25

Now my backup bottle of Khaki Vert won’t be so lonely.

    bday26

Tatin was right. My Dior mani didn’t even last two hours. I immediately removed it to play with my new bottles.

That night, I took a lot of bottle pics. And I decided to shoot other newly acquired bottles that I haven’t had time to post about.

    bday36

Like Nars Zulu and Midnight Express.

    bday37

    Jelly love.

    bday38

Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous and Diva of Geneva which were given to me at the OPI event.

    bday39

Orly La Playa, a fabulous blue.

    bday40

    My first Manglaze.

    bday42

Lele brought this bottle of Matte Is Murder to me at the hospital to cheer me up.

    bday43

    It worked.

These bottles of Barielle which were perfectly packed by Nikki.

Myrza’s Meadow, Falling Star, Slate of Affairs, Sweet Addiction. I can’t wait to play with Falling Star.

    bday41

The Barry M Nail Paints that Gibbs brought home from London.

These babies had an exciting time too because the airline lost the luggage they were in. So glad the luggage was found.

    bday33

    Here’s a closer look.

Berry Ice Cream, Strawberry Ice Cream, Mint Green, Lemon Ice Cream.

    bday34

Spring Green, Blueberry Ice Cream, Cobalt Blue.

    bday35

I put all these new bottles in the Smurf lunchbox which was one of J and Momon’s gifts to me.

    bday45

I love it – almost as much as I love the beautiful letters my friends wrote to me.

    bday44

The next day, Sunday, I had to get up earlier than I would have wanted because I was assisting Jill in a shoot.

There I was, bent over the glass sink, brushing my teeth when a little black box hiding under the glass caught my eye.

There was a note written by Jill: “Yes, this too!”

    bday46

I picked it up and sucked in my breath.

    bday47

    MAC In The Buff.

    bday48

Nuts. Especially since on Saturday night, as I was updating my wish list, I thought, “Oh yeah, I still don’t have MAC In The Buff.”

    Not anymore.

    Nuts nuts nuts.

It was a great 30th birthday. And not just because I can practically swim in polish.

It is wonderful to be surrounded by sweet souls who show you their love and care unabashedly, by people who support your obsession even if they think it’s crazy, by friends who refuse to let you not make a big deal out of your birthday.

I love you guys so much. I am the luckiest girl in the world.

  4. MUG SHOT: Caress Diamond Gay vs. MAC On The Prowl

    October 13, 2010 by pam

It’s been days since my last post and once again, I have a very good reason for not blogging.

    No, I’m no longer sick.

Actually, I feel great – even better than usual, save for my aching thighs and the bruise on my knee. But things have been crazy. Really really crazy.

I had to ride a plane. And take two helicopter rides. And chase pigs. And take a very steep hike down a volcano. And hang on for dear life as an ATV rolled and bounced over lava ruins. And swim under a giant moving moon. And drink four margaritas, two beers and three tequila shots. And run under the rain while holding a plate full of food. And be late for the sunrise and be too early for the sunset. And gasp over hotel suites. And win three hundred pesos at a slot machine. And eat cookies and drink crushed cookies. And eat eel. And talk so much that I ended up losing my voice. And do a little investigating. And try not to go nuts over the things I discover.

    Crazy, I told you.

But just because I haven’t been blogging doesn’t mean I’ve been neglecting polish. Oh no no no no no.

A lot of things have been happening on the nail polish front, I just haven’t blogged about them. James and the sweet little bottles from H&M. The James and Ji confusion. More bottles of Claire’s from super Sheree. All the bottles of Barry M Gibbs brought home from London (I’m in love, dear Barry M). Meeting two big bosses from OPI yesterday who were super cool and who talked about their new collections and gave me an OPI bracelet (expect a long post about that soon). Nars Zulu and Midnight Express (Nars King Kong, wait for me, you will be mine!). New Essies and OPIs at Rustans. The very sexy Orly La Playa.

Over the weekend, in the middle of all the drinking and volcano visits and chopper rides and the pig-chasing and the pigging out, I managed to paint my nails three different times.

First, I started with MAC Blue India which was crazy chipped by the time we got to the resort. So I replaced it with Barry M Mint Green because it was super pretty. I applied Mint Green between swimming and dinner and because Jill and J were crazy hungry, I had to stop mid-manicure. And that’s how I ended up going to dinner with Barry M Mint Green on one hand and naked nails on the other.

By the time we got back to the room, the polish on my left hand was all dented so I removed it and did a full mani of Orly La Playa. It is such a pretty blue. I love it.

Right now, I have Nars Zulu on my nails and yes, I love it too.

But I’m not here to blog about that, I’m here to blog about Caress Diamond Gay.

    dg3

I’m not kidding, it’s really called Diamond Gay.

    dg18

Isn’t that the best polish name ever?

    dg19

I’m pretty sure it was a typo and then somebody went, “Diamond Gay? It kinda works… run with it.”

And yes it works. Even without the R.

    dg11

Diamond Gay is a pretty pretty gray.

    dg12

And, while looking at it, I thought, hmm, it kinda looks familiar.

    dg10

Doesn’t the color remind you of MAC On The Prowl, one of my all-time favorites?

I pulled out my bottle to compare.

    dg2

I painted two of my nails with On The Prowl and walked up to Jill to see if she can tell the difference.

    dg15

She stared at my fingers for a really long time before figuring it out.

    dg13

    Can you figure it out?

    dg16

I had Diamond Gay on my ring and little fingers and On The Prowl on my middle and index fingers.

    dg17

I wouldn’t call them dead-on dupes because Caress Diamond Gay is a little lighter but pretty freaking close right?!

    dg14

Caress Diamond Gay was three coats, On The Prowl was two. On The Prowl was a lot easier to work with – it was creamy and had good pigment. Diamond Gay was a little thin but workable.

And because MAC On The Prowl is a limited edition and can only be found occasionally on Ebay, Caress Diamond Gay is a good alternative. And it’s just P27.75 – not even a dollar.

I buy my Caress bottles from SM and Watsons.

And now I must go back to the craziness.

  5. HEADQUARTERS: You know you’re sick when even Chanel can’t make you feel better

    October 6, 2010 by pam

I abandoned my blog for a couple of weeks for a very good reason.

And when I say “very good,” I don’t mean great and wonderful.

When I say “very good,” I mean, ohyesthatisvalidItotallygetitImightevenhavedonethesame.

    You see, I got sick.

I got sick on the day I posted about Chanel Steel and Strong and it was a really high fever that didn’t go away for two days.

And then, on Friday, my fever disappeared but I still wasn’t allowed to go out. And I bawled because that meant I was going to miss that afternoon’s Chanel event.

I had no choice. I dried my tears and I celebrated my good health by spending hours writing an article about my nail polish addiction.

    lsaddict2

Click here to see the big picture and read the whole thing.

It wasn’t strenuous, I was just on the couch writing, I didn’t think I was doing myself any harm but in hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have pushed it because after I sent off my story, I was sick again.

    And then I got sicker.

And my Chanel Steel manicure had to endure all kinds of torture.

Days and nights spent at the hospital. Seven blood extractions. An IV drip. Countless tears. Yes, when it comes to hospitals and needles, I am the biggest crybaby you’ve ever seen.

    hosp1

Unsurprisingly, my manicure had become a horrendous mess. It was chipsville. And I didn’t care. Nail polish was the last thing on my mind.

Let me say this again. And you will find it hard to believe. But I’m serious – nail polish was the last thing on my mind.

I just wanted to get better. And I wanted all the pricking to stop.

The lowest point of my entire stay at the hospital was on Tuesday at around 6 in the morning, six days after my fever started, just a few hours after the old man in the room next to mine died, less than an hour after all the crying and screaming from his room stopped, minutes after yet another blood extraction. I lay there in my hospital bed crying quietly. I was sick of being sick. I just wanted to get out of there.

It’s been a week since that morning and I’m happy to report that I am now much better.

I’ve gone back to work but I’ve been taking things a little slow. I went back to the hospital yesterday for a checkup and I’m waiting for test results that will be released in a few hours.

I no longer have Steel on my nails. I’ve been wearing Chanel Khaki Vert for days now and it’s starting to chip. I should go for another manicure soon.

It feels great to finally feel the desire to blog again. I had my laptop with me at the hospital but I didn’t open it – not even once. For days after leaving the hospital, I could only spend about ten minutes online before it felt too much. I started worrying about never wanting to blog again. I started worrying about never liking the internet again. But that was just the stupid dengue talking.

Soon, I hope, I’ll have the energy to start swatching again. And in case it doesn’t happen soon, I still have an entire folder of swatches that are waiting for attention.

In other news, visit Rustan’s because Nars Vintage Collection has finally hit the shelves along with Essie’s Fall 2010 Collection. Also, Orly is about to release its Plastix collection here. Plus expect even more exciting news from Rustan’s in the next few weeks.

    It’s good to be back.

Screw all the pricking, bring on the pedicures.
