  1. POLICE FILES: Confessions of an Ebay loser

    September 16, 2010 by pam

Step right up, step right up, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and be astounded by the world of madness you are about to witness! Drop the ice cream, forget the cotton candy and bring out your cameras – you are about to see a real freak up close!

And here she is… the Ebay Loser!

    ebay1

Unlike Jill, I am not great at Ebay.

Jill is excellent at Ebay. I don’t know how, I don’t know what training she’s had, I don’t know how close she is to the Ebay gods – but it’s like she has a PhD in Ebay. No, scratch that, it’s like she was born with the bidding gene.

As for me? It’s like I have a PhD in losing Ebay bids. No, scratch that, it’s like I was born with the “constantly be outbid” gene.

    ebay2

Jill has all these tricks and tactics to win bids. She takes note of the time her Ebay bids will end. She sets her alarm at 4 or 5 a.m. and actually gets up and logs on to Ebay to make sure she wins. She is a skilled Ebay sniper. She actually enjoys those last few seconds of a bid. Oh, the adrenaline rush. She is the MacGyver of Ebay.

Meanwhile, I am the Homer Simpson of Ebay.

I place my max bid and pat myself on the back for picking such a good number. And then I realize that I’ve been outbid and it’s too late because the bidding has ended. And then I feel like such an oaf and I start kicking myself.

It’s not a very pretty cycle.

In less than sixty days, I have lost eleven bids.

Eleven bids. In less than sixty days. That’s roughly one bid lost every five days.

And the saddest part is that most of the time, I lose by just a dollar.

    One. Freaking. Dollar.

I lost a bid for three bottles of Butter London – Jaffa, Twee and Chuffed.

    ebay3

I lost a bid for MAC On The Prowl. I love this polish so much and it wears like freaking iron on me so I wanted another bottle.

    ebay4

But no, I lost that too.

I also lost this bid for MAC Something About Pink which is a shame because I’ve been wanting to complete my Hello Kitty MAC polish collection.

    ebay5

And I also lost this bid for four brand new MAC polishes – Coconut Ice, Asiatique, Imperial Splendour, Blissed Out.

    ebay6

Four bottles of polish for a fraction of the price. Argh.

Then there was the bottle of MAC Blue India. Yes, I know I already have one bottle and a backup but I love this polish so much – it’s number one on my list – and I can’t imagine what it would be like to run out of it. So yes, I was trying to win one more bottle. Sue me.

    ebay7

But actually wait, no, don’t sue me, because I lost that bid too.

I also lost the bid for Chanel Orange Blossom. Which wasn’t so bad because it was only after I bid that I realized it was only 80% full.

    ebay8

But I bid on Chanel L.A. Sunset and that was bad because I really wanted this bottle. Ever since I saw it on Miss Bun, I’ve been lemming it really bad.

    ebay9

I gave MAC On The Prowl one more shot – this time with MAC Vestral White – but I lost that bid too.

    ebay10

And then.. I spotted two bids happening at the same time. Chanel London Bus Red and Chanel Sensuelle – two colors Miss Bun has been lemming. And I thought I was going to win for sure. The bids were ending really soon and I thought my max bids were high enough that even if someone tried to swoop in at the last minute, I would still win.

    ebay11

    I was wrong.

    Sigh.

And that ends this freak show. Eleven lost bids in sixty days.

My wallet’s happy but I’m not.

  2. POLICE FILES: A nail polish fairy tale

    September 14, 2010 by pam

WARNING: If you find feet freaky, stay away from this post.

Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved nail polish a normal amount.

She loved nail polish but she went for pedicures more often than manicures.

She used to say something she’s been hearing a lot lately from girls who aren’t hooked on polish: “Manicures don’t last very long on me.”

    ft1

She wore red polish to a 70s theme party. Yes, that explains the flower power dress. And no, Cinderella wasn’t invited.

    ft4

Back then, Nail Polish Girl had a thing for red polish.

    ft5

    But she also liked pink.

    ft3

    And brown, occasionally.

    ft2

Nail Polish Girl used to buy nail polish. But not very often.

    A couple of bottles here.

    ft6

A bottle or two when traveling.

    ft8

Nail Polish Girl had nail polish adventures outside her country. Like the time she tried Skittles in her Hong Kong hotel room after digging through the nail polish bins in Sasa.

    That was fun.

    ft7

Since this was before The Era Of Black Nail Polish, Nail Polish Girl wore different colors on her nails.

Red, especially. Which she rarely wears now.

She wore red when her band played at Fete de la Musique for the first time.

    ft9

    Red at that 70s party.

    ft13

Red at the awarding party of the crazy night race she joined.

    ft20

She lost. Second place. Not freaking good enough.

    ft21

    Red when drinking.

    ft19

And then there was this unidentified purplish pink polish.

    ft10

A purplish pink that made another appearance in Japan.

    ft12

    This unidentified violet.

    ft16

What shade was this? What brand?

    ft18

    Sadly, she can’t remember.

    ft15

She finds it frustrating that she can’t remember the names of old polish she used to own and love.

    ft14

    Not this blue.

    ft17

Not this sheer monstrosity she would never wear now.

    ft11

She refers to the time of polish amnesia as the dark ages. It was like an evil witch had cursed her to never remember.

But after the dark ages came her love affair with black nail polish.

    ft22

    And then… ENLIGHTENMENT.

    ft23

The nail polish obsession hit and it hit big time.

This was the night she brought OPI Mad As A Hatter with her on a night she grabbed margaritas with friends.

They all ended up painting their nails – yes, even the boys.

    ft24

And now, she can proudly say she can name the nail polish she was wearing just by looking at pictures.

    Butter London British Racing Green.

    ft25

OPI Jade Is The New Black.

    ft26

Again, Jade Is The New Black.

    ft32

    Chanel Blue Satin.

    ft28

    Chanel Particuliere.

    ft30

    Essie Fishnet Stockings.

    ft29

    Orly Haute Red.

    ft31

    Goodbye, dark ages. Hello, enlightenment.

And Nail Polish Girl lived happily ever after.

  3. HEADQUARTERS: Polish Blogs, Chanel Les Khakis Madness

    September 12, 2010 by pam

Yesterday, I received horrible news about a friend. Since it was five in the morning and I couldn’t do anything about it, I started a project. I needed to. Because the alternative would have been to break down and I didn’t want to do that. To take my mind off things, I started compiling the polish blogs I can see online.

I put the page up HERE but this is clearly a work of progress. There are hundreds and hundreds – possibly thousands – of nail blogs out there and it will take a lot of work but I will try.

In other news, while I was moaning and groaning about not making it to Vogue’s Fashion Night Out, my friend Alvin, who recently moved to New York, posted photos of his fun FNO adventure.

He tagged photos of me showing the crazy line at the Chanel store on Spring St.

    chanel

He said it went around the block.

    chanel2

Faith, another friend in New York, described the lines at Chanel as ridiculous.

While people flocked to Chanel’s Soho store, Chanel.com went completely bonkers. For hours and hours, it was unable to handle the traffic of people trying to place orders. It’s working fine now though – so if you want to order, go!

Some MUA girls tried calling Chanel stores to order and a lot of them had only one color left.

This was the reason behind the Chanel chaos:

    chanel3

Yes, the limited edition Les Khakis collection that I started hunting down last month.

Can you blame people for going nuts? I would have totally lined up too.

For fantastic swatches of Khaki Brun, Khaki Rose and Khaki Vert, visit Lacquerized. And check out All Lacquered Up’s camo nail art using the three shades. I want to do that too.

And to read a little more about the madness, check out this article on Racked: The Line to Buy $25 Nail Polish at Chanel Soho Was Never-Ending.

  4. MUG SHOT: Orly Dazzle and Orly Shine

    September 11, 2010 by pam

Also known as the mug shots that told me one thing – I cannot wear silver polish. EVER.

This reminds me of the time many years ago when my aunt visited from Seattle and gave me a bottle of Sally Hansen Chrome Makeup.

    sally-hensen-sally-hansen-chrome-nail-makeup

I had never seen chrome polish before and it looked awesome to me. I can’t remember what the shade was called but the color was rose gold.

I tried painting it on my nails and it looked awful on me.

But I still kept it in my bedroom along with my other bottles.

Months later, I decided to try again. It still looked awful on me.

And that’s what I did. Every few months, I’d try the polish on again but it would still look awful on me.

I did this for years. I don’t know what I was thinking. Did I expect the color to just magically look good on me one day?

    Apparently so.

It never did though – until the bottle just disappeared.

So yes, this is a very sad time at the Polish Police Headquarters because I have finally come to terms with the fact that like that chrome polish, silver nail polish looks awful on me.

Which is a shame because I love silver. I love anything silver.

Earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces, even shoes.

I loved these bottles of Orly too – and there is nothing wrong with them. They’re wonderful, easy to apply, pigmented, metallic, shiny polish. The problem is me.

    Check it out.

Orly Dazzle. Released with the Back To School Collection, this metallic silver has become part of Orly’s permanent line.

    Orly Dazzle

A lot of polish fans call this their favorite silver metallic and I can’t blame them. It’s rich, it’s shiny, even one coat offers enough opacity.

    Orly Dazzle

But it really looks awful on me.

    Orly Dazzle

    Even with flash.

    Orly Dazzle

And now, Orly Shine. A newer release, this is part of the orly Foil FX Collection and is now available in stores in Manila.

It’s a lovely silver shimmer packed with silver micro-glitter.

But again, it looks terrible on me.

    Orly Shine

This photo doesn’t capture how shiny this is.

    Orly Shine

Dazzle and Shine are very very similar – Shine just lives up to its name and is a little more shiny.

    Orly Shine

Sigh, silver. I really wish you loved me. Why can’t you love me?

  5. MUG SHOT: Etude House OR204, PK002, GR605, GR604

    September 10, 2010 by pam

Etude House sent me a lot of goodies recently and naturally, I reached for the nail polish first.

They sent me four bottles to play with: OR204, PK002, GR605 and GR604.

    etude15

    I struggled a bit with OR204.

    etude1

It was a bit streaky and I had to do four coats for smooth coverage.

    etude2

But I kept at it because it’s such a pretty pretty color.

    etude3

PK002 was a bit sheer. This was four coats.

    etude12

This color has a little bit more red in it than the photos show.

    etude14

It’s a sweet pink, a safe color anyone can wear.

    etude13

GR 605 was the easiest to work with.

    etude17

    It was smooth and hassle-free.

    etude16

I love this color. Love it.

    etude18

It’s no secret that I love greens and this one is no different.

    etude20

I love GR605 but my favorite of the lot is GR604.

    etude4

I found it odd that they labeled this a green when it looks more blue to me but it really doesn’t matter. Because this color – it rocks.

    etude5

This would look awesome as a pedicure too.

    etude6

    So freaking pretty.

    etude7

I thought it looked a little close to Chanel Nouvelle Vague and of course I had to check.

    etude8

    Hmm.

    etude9

So I painted my middle finger with Nouvelle Vague to compare.

    etude10

I showed my fingers to Jill to ask if she could tell them apart and she pointed to my middle finger and said, “The others are darker.”

    etude11

Okay, so not exactly a dupe.

But for P128, it’s a pretty damn good way to kill a lemming.

These polishes are just my second tango with Etude polish, the first being the goodies from Stef.

And they told me one thing – I really should haul ass to an Etude House soon to stock up on more of these babies.
