  1. POLICE FILES: Seche Vite surprise

    May 17, 2010 by pam

A box arrived from a great-aunt in the US and my mother, who helped sort and distribute the treasures, handed me my pile of goodies.

A big bag of macadamia nuts, a big bag of Reese’s miniatures, two pairs of shoes and this tiny little packet:

    Seche vite surprise

I tried to feel through the bubble envelope and realized that what was inside seemed to be in the shape of a nail polish bottle.

Instantly, I forgot about the nuts, the chocolates and the shoes. “Whoa,” I thought, “What could this be?”

I didn’t remember ordering anything from the States and sending it to their Las Vegas address. All my pending packages are scheduled to land in Manila.

When I couldn’t take the suspense any longer, I tore into the package.

    And I found this inside:

    Seche vite surprise

A sexy bottle of Seche Vite top coat that I had completely forgotten about. I ordered this late last year in hopes that my mom and brother can bring it home for me after their vacation in the US.

Hurrah for polish that just sneaks up on you, hurrah for my Seche Vite surprise.

  2. INVESTIGATION: Organic Rituals Spa is the land of Zoya

    May 13, 2010 by pam

It was my search for good matte nail polish that led me to discover Zoya, which quickly became one of my favorite nail polish brands.

    Zoya

The bottles are sexy, the colors are gorgeous (matte or not), the formula is fantastic and the wear is impressive. Zoya is three-free. It does not contain toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate – dangerous chemicals that can do evil things to your body. It’s safe enough for pregnant women to wear. Thanks to Zoya, they can flash their pretty manicured nails without worrying about possible birth defects.

There is no doubt in the world that I love Zoya. My Zoya wishlist is a mile long. I even named my Petville pet after Zoya.

The only thing I didn’t love about Zoya is that it wasn’t available locally – I had to resort to ordering it online and waiting days and days (sometimes weeks) for the bottles to reach me.

But a couple of weeks ago, Katrina, one of the owners of Organic Rituals got in touch with me to invite me to their spa. They have eco-conscious facilities and they use natural and organic oils, scrubs and lotions in their massage and body treatments, she said. Naturally, Organic Rituals also uses vegan and non-toxic nail polishes.

And that’s when Katrina dropped the magic word. Zoya. Organic Rituals uses Zoya and SpaRitual products in their manicures and pedicures. And it gets better – this month, they actually started selling Zoya polishes.

I stopped by Organic Rituals for a quick visit (read: to check out their stocks of Zoya).

Look at what greeted me when I arrived:

    How pretty.

    And there’s more.

    Zoya @ OrganicRituals Spa

Yes, Organic Rituals is the land of Zoya.

    Here are my top picks:

    Zoya picks

    Kalista, Pinta, Ibiza, Raven, Kotori

There’s a wide range of Zoya colors available at Organic Rituals and I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like – whether you’re a fan of sheers and pretty pastels or you’re hooked on dark vampy colors like me.

I’m already planning my next visit to Organic Rituals and next time, I’m actually going to stay for a treatment. I hear their scrubs are pretty good.

Organic Rituals Spa sells Zoya polishes at P380 each. Visit Organic Rituals Spa at the Mezzanine Floor of Atlanta Centre 31 Annapolis St. Greenhills San Juan. The spa is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays to Saturdays and by appointment on Sundays. Call 661-3101.

  3. POLICE FILES: The search for Lush’s Lemony Flutter ends here

    by pam

I’ve read countless rave reviews of Lush’s Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter online.

It keeps raking in perfect and near-perfect scores on various review sites, it’s been declared by many nail polish fans as the holy grail of cuticle treatments and people can’t stop talking about how in love they are with it.

“Rich lemon sorbet to soften rough finger tips and toes. Lemony Flutter does for your cuticles what lemonade does for your thirst on hot summer days: it provides instant relief. Lemon infusion, shea butter, avocados and mangos make it tempting enough to eat but it’s really meant for your cuticles, and anywhere else that’s in need of some heavy duty softening and moisturizing – like elbows, heels and knees.” – LushUsa.com

    How can you resist?

Naturally, I wanted in on the Lemony Flutter action. I wanted – no needed – my own tub of the good stuff.

But finding it in Manila wasn’t easy.

I went to Lush in Shangri-La and I was told they didn’t have it. They haven’t had it for a while, they said, but they promised to text me when stocks arrived. Like a good girl, I wrote my name, telephone number and the words “Lemony Flutter” in their logbook in hopes that they would remember me when the tubs of cuticle butter landed.

Not satisfied with my efforts, I tried calling every single branch of Lush and received the same answer – no sign of Lemony Flutter in their store.

I went to Lush in Bonifacio High Street. I walked all the way to Lush from The Stock Market where my friends were even if my feet were killing me and my legs were begging for rest (we had spent the entire day standing – first in a huge kitchen for a six-hour long cooking class and then at S&R where we bought groceries). I just had to check if they had Lemony Flutter. No luck. They haven’t seen the stuff since last year, the Lush girls said. But if I could kindly write my name and number… Yeah, yeah, yeah, I knew the drill. Again, like a good girl, I wrote my info on their logbook but realized with horror that there were other names before me and the good girls who owned those names all wanted to be notified about the arrival of Lemony Flutter. Crap.

Feeling defeated, that evening, I asked people on MakeupAlley to recommend an alternative cuticle treatment. “No sign of Lemony Flutter here,” I said.

But I wasn’t ready to give up yet. Yesterday, I returned to Lush in Shangri-La to check if some Lemony Flutter had arrived. Maybe, just maybe, I thought, it was going to be my lucky day. But nope, still no sign of Lemony Flutter.

We left Lush and went to The Body Shop where I tried to find a replacement – yeah, I was desperate for anything even though in reality, my cuticles are just fine – and I almost bought an almond oil treatment before deciding that no, I will not settle for anything less than Lemony Flutter.

Then, we went up one floor to Cibo and I sat down, ready to drown my sorrows in squash soup and garlic and rosemary beef tenderloin.

And then guess what happened. Guess.

Tatin arrived and said something about coming from out of town but I didn’t hear the rest of her words because she had plunked down a tub of Lemony Flutter in front of me.

A tub of Lemony Flutter. In front of me. Just like that.

She found it in Lush in Mall of Asia. And it was the last one.

And that was the end of my search for Lemony Flutter.

    Lemony Flutter

Thank you, Tatin. Thank you, Lush MOA. And welcome home, dear Lemony Flutter. We belong together. My cuticles are now lemony smooth. We’ve only been together a night and you’re already rocking my world.

  4. POLICE FILES: Goodies from Korea

    May 10, 2010 by pam

My friends and I were at our favorite Thai restaurant but I couldn’t enjoy the food. I had an awful migraine – the left side of my head was throbbing. I popped an Advil and was waiting for it to work when Lele walked in.

You know what works better than Advil in getting rid of your headache? Goodies from Korea.

Lele recently went to South Korea with her family and check out what she brought home for me:

    Goodies from Korea

From left: Tony Moly Cobalt Blue, Tony Moly Nail Star Two-Way Nail Art Pen & Brush in black, Nature Republic Color Deco Nail (not sure about the shade), Skin Food Milk Creamy Nail BL002

I love Korean polishes. The colors are pretty, the prices are reasonable and the wear is good – I just wish they actually named their polish shades instead of just using codes and numbers.

The Two-Way Nail Art Pen & Brush has two tips.

    A super thin brush

    Two-way nail art pen

and a metal pen tip. This is perfect for nail art fans.

    Check out the swatches:

    Swatches!

I can’t wait to wear these polishes. I’m most excited about Tony Moly Cobalt Blue. That’s a brilliant shade of blue!

    Thanks Le!

This surprise was better than Advil. Advil has nothing on these polishes. And coming from someone who depends on those green gel capsules to get through the most difficult time of the month, that’s a pretty big thing.

  5. MUG SHOT: MAC Blue India

    May 7, 2010 by pam

I graduated seven years ago but never made the time to go back to my university to get my diploma. I’ve been telling myself the same thing for years now – it’s such a hassle.

But just two days after it landed, I made the time to go to Tatin‘s house after work to pick up my MAC Blue India – even if it was around midnight, even if I was tired. When it comes to nail polish and other things we love – there’s no such thing as a hassle.

MAC Blue India is a beauty. I unpacked her carefully.

And just hours later, early in the morning, my manicurist stopped by, erased all traces of Chanel Rouge Noir and L.A. Girl Disco Brites Funkadelic and replaced them with the goodness that is Blue India.

Here she is, under the bright sun:

Blue India is so creamy and smooth and she applies like a dream.

I seriously seriously love this polish. I love Blue India so much that I’m thinking of getting a back-up bottle.

    MAC Blue India

Blue India is my first MAC polish and I am now kicking myself for discovering this brand only now.

And kicking myself won’t be a really bad thing because I’ve got Blue India on my toes too.
